Excerpt from Forestry and Arboriculture in Massachusetts Ladies and Gentlemen, - It has been concisely stated in the report of a forest commission of a neighboring State that a wise economy in the use of the natural resources of a country should recognize the fact that certain regions of the earth's surface are adapted by nature to remain covered with forests, and that any attempt to devote such regions to other purposes can only be followed by failure and disaster. Through the work on the forests of the United States, published in connection with the census of 1880, t it is now possible to form a correct estimate of the immense economic value of our forests. In this volume full accounts are given of the four hundred trees which make up our forest flora, and nearly every one is shown to possess some special value or adaptation to special surroundings. A knowledge, too, of the physical importance of the forests, as shown by a careful study of the effect produced by their removal, both in this country and in Europe, is becoming widely disseminated. Excerpt from Forestry in New England: Revised Principles of Handling Woodlands, cover mainly the three subjects Silvicultural Methods of Reproduction, Timber Estimating and The Growth of Trees and Forests which are here included in three chapters. As a textbook, then, for the post-graduate forest schools giving the highest grade of instruction, this book will have a greater value for its detailed discussion of New England forests in Vol. II, than for the portion dealing with general forestry. But it is hoped that, for the undergraduate forest. Schools giving a slightly lower grade of instruction, all portions of the book will prove useful. The publications of the United States Forest Service as well as those issued by the Forestry Departments of the various eastern states, have been freely consulted, and much of the information which they contain has been incorporated in these pages. Excerpt from Trends in Massachusetts Forests: A Half-Century of Change Massachusetts, covering million acres or 62 percent of the State. However, Massachusetts did not always have extensive forest cover. Early settlers here cleared roughly two-thirds of the original forest for agriculture. But much of this land was only marginally suitable for Iong-term farming and was later abandoned as settlers moved west. In the early 1800s, the acreage in farms began to decline, a trend that continues today. Massachusetts forest land gained steadily in area as forests reclaimed abandoned land through natural regeneration, reaching a peak in the early 1950s. Since that time, these new forests have been outpaced by losses of forest land to development. Declines in forest land area are likely to continue, as development pressures increase on forest as well as farmland. To slow the loss of forest land, state, federal, and nongovernmental organizations are working to keep land in forest.
