During this five-year period, over 150 publications were produced by the institute's 14 research scientists, including a book, 83 journal articles, 31 reports, 10 technical notes, 5 newsletters, and 11 papers/summaries in conference/ workshop proceedings. The overall focus of the publications is forest resource management-related research and practice. Topical areas and scales of investigation are diverse and include natural disturbance regimes and landscape dynamics; carbon budgets and effects of climate change on forests; and silviculture studies on site preparation, tree improvement, vegetation management, growth and yield, disease management, and harvesting in conifer, mixedwood, and hardwood forests. Forests are valuable in our daily lives, crucial to our nation's ecomony, and integral to the long-term health of the environment. Yet, forestry research has been critically underfunded, and the data generated under current research programs is not enough to meet the diverse needs of our society. Forestry Research provides a research agenda that should yield the information we need to develop responsible policies for forest use and management. In this consensus of forestry experts, the volume explores: The diverse and competing concerns of the timber industry, recreational interests, and wildlife and environmental organizations. The gap between our need for information and the current output of the forestry research program. Areas of research requiring attention: biology of forest organisms, ecosystem function and management, human-forest interactions, wood as raw material, and international trade and competition. Forestry Research is an important book of special interest to federal and state policymakers involved in forestry issues, research managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the field.

This report describes a survey taken to obtain input from major clients of the Forest Renewal Group at the Ontario Forest Research Institute to review and plan a research and development strategy. The survey was conducted to identify key research needs and ways to improve the group's technology transfer to its clients. Of the 133 forms distributed, 98 were completed and returned from 13 container and 9 bareroot nurseries, 13 Forest Management Agreement holders, and 63 Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources sources. Respondents were categorized by OMNR administrative region and group and regional and group influences were identified in each section.

The Bioindicators of Forest Sustainability Project has the goal of developing a forest condition rating system based on physiological approaches to monitor forest health and stress. Using remotely sensed spectral data and ground-based physiological measurements, the Project seeks to classify forest stands on a scale from healthy to stressed, relative to an established benchmark. This report reviews progress in research being conducted for the Project in the following areas: hyperspectral remote sensing; spectral indices and features; ground-based assessments of such parameters as chlorophyll production, carbon isotope ratios, stem electrical resistance, leaf area index, and canopy structure; airborne hyperspectral imagery; and co-operative research and partnerships.
