Excerpt from Forest Planting in Westen Kansas The investigations upon which this report is based were made for the purpose of determining the kinds of forest trees best adapted to western Kansas and the methods of treatment which have proved most successful. Since there is little likelihood that more than small local areas of the region can ever be irrigated, only the species which can be grown without irrigation are described. With an artificial sup ply of water better results can be obtained with these species, and others that could not be grown without it can be introduced. Whatever may be the reasons for the absence of natural forests on the Great Plains, a close study of established plantations proves that, with an intelligent selection Of species and proper care, planted trees can, to a considerable extent, be made to supply the deficiency. Saline, Smoky Hill, Arkansas, and Cimarron. There are numerous tributary creeks and streams. (see map.) None of the rivers nor mally carries a large volume Of water, and some of them, as well as many of the creeks, go dry during periods Of deficient rainfall. Yet, even when no water is visible in the beds of such streams as the Platte and the Arkansas, one has but to dig down in the sand a foot or two to find water in abundance. There is a constant under ow, and trees growing in the valleys of these streams do not suffer because the surface ow occasionally ceases. Excerpt from Forestry Pamphlets, Kansas, Vol. 2 Fig. 160. A cut-over woodlot in fine condition to plant with acorns, walnuts, pecans, or with seedling trees of some desirable kind. The problem to be solved in handling the woodlot is. How can the stand of trees be improved and the yield increased? If we want to grow a crop of corn we plant the seed and culti vate the growing crop; if we want to grow good fruit we prune and spray the orchard; if we want to grow high-grade lumber - producing trees we must choose the valuable kinds, plant and care for them as their demands require.
