Folded Wisdom is an inspirational testament to the depth of a father’s love for his children, and an intimate look into beautiful, raw, human communication. Within the pages of this book, Joanna Guest shares the insightful notes her father drew for her and her brother Theo every day for nearly 15 years. For her entire childhood, Joanna’s father, Bob, had a ritual: wake up at dawn, walk the dog, and sit down at the kitchen table with a blank pad of paper and plenty of colored markers to craft notes for his two children. Over the years, word games and puzzles for five-year-olds morphed into thoughtful guidance and reflections for his teenagers approaching adulthood. Now, with more than 3,500 of her father’s colorful notes in hand, Joanna has decided that the lessons tucked inside are worth sharing. Folded Wisdom highlights the collection of Bob’s notes, telling a story filled with universal values that encourages meaningful self-reflection – about how we all face successes and failures; express happiness and sadness; and communicate frustration, praise, and love to one another. Heartfelt and full of possibility for the future, a father’s folded notes and drawings are timeless reminders of love.

This second book in the ground-breaking On the Table series about the culture of gastronomy as artistic expression - edited by Charlotte Birnbaum - delves into the art of napkin folding. It features German master Joan Sallas, whose folded napkins graced the Metropolitan Museum's exhibit of 1780 Viennese royal table silver. (Watch him fold a ''water lily'' napkin on YouTube.) Birnbaum interviews Sallas on the history of napkin folding, stretching back to the Renaissance and Baroque, and contributes a short essay on the art's complex history; the remainder of the book is an illustrated catalog of Sallas's ornate folding techniques.

The current financial and on-going ecological crises have taught us that without practical wisdom, business, organisations and leadership cannot be sustainable. In response to this situation, the Handbook of Practical Wisdom presents a critically informed understanding of wise practices, contributing to more integrative organizational and leadership studies and practice. The focus on integration emphasises the interdependencies of practical wisdom in relation to members, groups and cultures of organisations in their socio-cultural spheres. Wisdom has long slipped from the scholarly map, and so this handbook provides revived and new mappings for today and the future. Seeking to actualize creative potentials of practical wisdom, this book and series aspires to contribute to the contemporary odysseys and quests for orientation in organisation and management research and practice. Wisdom research, as presented in this book, provides bridges to underestimated, neglected or forgotten knowledge and offers transformative passages between Scylla - the rocks of dogmatic modernity - and Charybdis - the whirlpool of dispersed post-modernity. Practical wisdom allows for a better equipped and more experiential and reflexive journey and fosters the art of mindful travelling, beyond a reactive, moralizing sentimentalism. Accordingly, this handbook serves as a medium for reassessing and rearticulating more responsible ways of ’praxis’ in the field of organization and management. In this spirit, each chapter opens a space for dialogue and debate, inviting further inquiries, conversations and explorations by and among its readers: students, academics and practitioners.

In general the Old Testament book of Proverbs provides a compendium of seemingly random succinct universal truths about godly wisdom. However, chapters 1""9 offer a coherent curriculum that teaches the reader how to acquire wisdom and build one's life on a foundation of eternal values. Ostensibly, this curriculum is taught by a father to his son over the course of the first nine chapters. Beginning his instruction by declaring "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Solomon, the author of these chapters, introduces a father narrator who offers seventeen "My son" wisdom instructions to his son. While these seventeen wisdom instructions involve a father instructing his son, they teach universal wisdom truths for "attaining wisdom and discipline" (Prov. 1:2a), that have intrigued readers of all ages for thousands of years. Godly wisdom and discipline are rare in our broken and fallen world. As such, godly wisdom and discipline offer us priceless insight and discernment that "is more precious than rubies and nothing you desire can compare. . . . With [wisdom] are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. [Wisdom's] fruit is better than fine gold . . . [and] choice silver" (Prov. 8:11, 18) In other words, wisdom is a treasure to be sought. Every son or daughter naturally yearns for wise parental guidance and, in particular, the healthy parent/child relationship that is essential for a child to become a thriving adult of integrity. Because parents were once sons or daughters who were influenced by their parents who were once sons and daughters, it makes sense that a parent learns how to guide and instruct a child through his/her own experience as a son or daughter. Because from generation to generation brokenness and sin can distort and disrupt parental instruction, Solomon's timeless God-given fatherly wisdom curriculum provides much needed essential wise counsel from the perfect Father.
