Excerpt from Fisheries of Key West and the Clam Industry of Southern Florida Most of the wholesale trade in fish is carried on from November to April, when perhaps 90 per cent of the annual catch of fish is taken. Several dealers operate during the entire year, but others are actively engaged in Key West only during the winter. Dealers in sponges and turtles operate throughout. The year. All the whole saling is done with dealers outside the city. It was not until 1920 that an ice-making and cold-storage plant was built to take care of excess catches of fish. Previous to that time, notably early in 1919, the fishing industry suffered severe losses when the one small ice-making plant in the city became disabled. The retail fish trade is taken care of at the wharves, where the fishermen keep their catches alive in boat wells or in live cars, selling direct to the consumer. There are no local retail stores that sell fish, but small quantities are peddled in pushcarts throughout the city. A person desiring to buy fish goes to the wharves, looks over the stock in the various live cars, and selects the fish he wants. The fisherman then removes the fish selected from the live car with a dip net and cleans and strings them without severing their heads. This method of keeping fish is especially desirable in such a warm climate, as it eliminates icing and insures fresh fish at all times. The variety of fish sold in Key West is probably greater than in any other locality in the United States. A string of fish as sold at the fish wharves usually consists of from 2 to 4 species, but if one so desired one would have no difficulty in buying a string containing 20 fish of different kinds. Excerpt from The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States It is now nearly four hundred years Since these grounds were first fished upon by Europeans, and their resources are still unfailing; but the fishing interests have been mainly transferred to the New World, France alone of European countries having continued to send fishing vessels across the Atlantic down to 1880. Since then, however, the Portuguese have begun to exhibit some activity in connection with the cod fishery of the Grand Bank, and in the Spring and sum mer of 1885 bought several New England fishing schooners and fitted out others from home ports. Their voyages proving generally successful, they have added more vessels to their fishing fleet during the latter part of this year, and it is quite possible that, in the course of a few seasons. Located where the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea converge, the Florida Keys are distinctive for their rich and varied marine fauna. The Keys are home to nearly sixty taxonomic families of bivalves such as clams and mussels--roughly half the world's bivalve family diversity. The first in a series of three volumes on the molluscan fauna of the Keys and adjacent regions, Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves provides a comprehensive treatment of these bivalves, and also serves as a comparative anatomical guide to bivalve diversity worldwide. Paula Mikkelsen and Rüdiger Bieler cover more than three hundred species of bivalves, including clams, scallops, oysters, mussels, shipworms, jewel boxes, tellins, and many lesser-known groups. For each family they select an exemplar species and illustrate its shell and anatomical features in detail. They describe habitat and other relevant information, and accompany each species account with high-resolution shell photographs of other family members. Text and images combine to present species--to family-level characteristics in a complete way never before seen. The book includes fifteen hundred mostly color photographs and images of shells, underwater habitats, bivalves in situ, original anatomical and hinge drawings, scanning electron micrographs, and unique transparent--shell illustrations with major organ systems color-coded and clearly shown. Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves is the most complete guide to subtropical bivalves available. It is an essential tool for students and teachers of molluscan diversity and systematics, and an indispensable identification guide for collectors, scuba divers, naturalists, environmental consultants, and natural-resource managers.

[A] fascinating volume, which establishes marine environmental history as a major new discipline for academics as well as an exciting way to bring history and the natural world alive for the public.ANDREW A. ROSENBERG, UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIREThe HMAP project is to be congratulated on this book, which presents vivid, evidence-based reconstructions of historical fisheries and the prolific ecosystems in which they were embedded.TONY J. PITCHER, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIAThe ingenuity and scholarship of the authors allow us to see ... how human societies have depended on and influenced marine living resources from periwinkles to whales.MIKE SINCLAIR, BEDFORD INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHYThis book exalts the surprisingly fruitful marriage of historians and marine scientists - a union that has proven to be one of the most exciting developments in ocean research in recent years.KATHERINE RICHARDSON, UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGENFor centuries the seas appeared to offer limitless supplies of food and other resources, their waters a cornucopia never to be exhausted. In more recent times, episodes such as the extreme exploitation and subsequent collapse of cod populations of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland have highlighted the fallaciousness of this view. Yet all too often the lessons from our historical interactions with marine animals are little known, let alone learned.Based on research for the History of Marine Animal Populations project, Oceans Past examines the complex relationship our forebears had with the sea and the animals that inhabit it. It presents eleven studies ranging from fisheries and invasive species to offshore technology and the study of marine environmental history, bringing together the perspectives of historians and marine scientists to enhance understanding of ocean management of the past, present and future. In doing so, it also highlights the influence that changes in marine ecosystems have upon the politics, welfare and culture of human societies.
