Excerpt from Fingers and Toes The secret of my power is that I am better supplied with muscles than any one of the fingers; and my muscles are of all kinds too, some long and slender, others short and thick. What is called the ball cf the thumb is nothing but muscle, and whenthe skin is taken off you can see four masses of red flesh (meat you might call it), which are sepa rate muscles, and have each its name (a long Latin one too), and each its own special, work to do in moving the thumb across the hand. You can know that there are muscles in the ball of the thumb even while the skin is on for when a muscle contracts it becomes hard and tense, like bone almost; and if you squeeze a book or a ball between your fingers and thumb, you can, with the other hand, feel the ball of the thumb grow hard when you exert your strength, and become softer again when your efforts cease. You can feel the same thing in the arm when you bend it at the elbow, and in the calf of the leg when you rise on tip-toe; in all these cases the hardening of the muscle shows that it is at work. Excerpt from A Clinical Atlas: Variations of the Bones of the Hands and Feet For many years I have devoted myself to the study of variations in man, especially to those of the spine and of the bones of the hand and foot. The importance of these in the practice of surgery becomes clearer day by day. This Atlas has been prepared for the use of the practitioner. Some variations are discussed which are of interest to the orthopaedist, but attention has been given chiefly to those which may be expected to appear in skiagraphs taken after an injury and which may suggest a fracture to the unwary. Excerpt from Human Teeth Can Be Rendered as Durable as Fingers and Toes: A Plain and Complete Explanation of the Process The educated and conscientious dentists who can and do insert such solid gold plugs, are, in these times, very numerous but the unskillful and mercenary pretenders, who can not, are easily more numerous. AS none are better aware of their inability than these pretenders them selves, they give their preference to silver amalgam, or silver cement, and advise their patients to have all, or nearly all their defective teeth filled with it. These fillings will invariably blacken and other wise injure the teeth. Some of the smaller cavities in the front teeth they will consent to stuff with gold but as they cannot condense it so as to make solid gold plugs.
