Dr Francis S. Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world's leading scientists, working at the cutting edge of the study of DNA, the code of life. Yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God. How does he reconcile the seemingly unreconcilable? In THE LANGUAGE OF GOD he explains his own journey from atheism to faith, and then takes the reader on a stunning tour of modern science to show that physics, chemistry and biology -- indeed, reason itself -- are not incompatible with belief. His book is essential reading for anyone who wonders about the deepest questions of all: why are we here? How did we get here? And what does life mean?

This is a book about science, religion, and the world in between. I was born into a Christian family, but fell out of religion and in love with the scientific method. I had little need of faith, I thought, when science could tell me so much more about the world, and ask so little of me in return. But as I aged into young adulthood, a new chapter of my story began. Did I really know why I believed what I believed? How could I be so certain of my convictions when I hadn't even honestly considered the evidence? This book traces my journey through the furthest reaches of thought, a journey that took me through the realms of psychology, biology, physics, and belief. Could I find a place for faith in the modern world? Or was I right to cast it off as I did?

“Ann Druyan has unearthed a treasure. It is a treasure of reason, compassion, and scientific awe. It should be the next book you read.” —Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith “A stunningly valuable legacy left to all of us by a great human being. I miss him so.” —Kurt Vonnegut Carl Sagan's prophetic vision of the tragic resurgence of fundamentalism and the hope-filled potential of the next great development in human spirituality The late great astronomer and astrophysicist describes his personal search to understand the nature of the sacred in the vastness of the cosmos. Exhibiting a breadth of intellect nothing short of astounding, Sagan presents his views on a wide range of topics, including the likelihood of intelligent life on other planets, creationism and so-called intelligent design, and a new concept of science as "informed worship." Originally presented at the centennial celebration of the famous Gifford Lectures in Scotland in 1985 but never published, this book offers a unique encounter with one of the most remarkable minds of the twentieth century.

For all the discussion in the media about creationism and 'Intelligent Design', virtually nothing has been said about the evidence in question - the evidence for evolution by natural selection. Yet, as this succinct and important book shows, that evidence is vast, varied, and magnificent, and drawn from many disparate fields of science. The very latest research is uncovering a stream of evidence revealing evolution in action - from the actual observation of a species splitting into two, to new fossil discoveries, to the deciphering of the evidence stored in our genome. Why Evolution is True weaves together the many threads of modern work in genetics, palaeontology, geology, molecular biology, anatomy, and development to demonstrate the 'indelible stamp' of the processes first proposed by Darwin. It is a crisp, lucid, and accessible statement that will leave no one with an open mind in any doubt about the truth of evolution.

The frontiers of religion and science have always been pushed forward by curious and obsessed individuals, like: the monk who kept banned books in a secret library under the nose of the pope; the explorers who searched for the lost tribes of Israel but found a new continent instead; the eccentric doctor and a mad monk who intuited scientific truths well before future generations would prove their theories correct; the archaeologists who discovered the goddess just in time for feminism; the utopians who never quite found what they were looking for; and a current flock of priests and nuns who go wherever knowledge takes them. It is a delicious quirk of history that individuals dismissed by their contemporaries as eccentrics and troublemakers are often those with the most impact on the world. Curious Obsessions in the History of Science and Spirituality is a captivating look at the famous and the forgotten who emerged in times of extreme change and social disruption to change science and spirituality for ever. During our current Covid19 pandemic, this collection is highly relevant to a world still seeking novel answers to the human condition and also drawn to old theories long ago debunked.

An essential examination of the historical relationship between science and religion. Since its publication in 2002, Science and Religion has proven to be a widely admired survey of the complex relationship of Western religious traditions to science from the beginning of the Christian era to the late twentieth century. In the second edition, eleven new essays expand the scope and enhance the analysis of this enduringly popular book. Tracing the rise of science from its birth in the medieval West through the scientific revolution, the contributors here assess historical changes in scientific understanding brought about by transformations in physics, anthropology, and the neurosciences and major shifts marked by the discoveries of Copernicus, Galileo, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and others. In seeking to appreciate the intersection of scientific discovery and the responses of religious groups, contributors also explore the theological implications of contemporary science and evaluate approaches such as the Bible in science and the modern synthesis in evolution, which are at the center of debates in the historiography, understanding, and application of science. The second edition provides chapters that have been revised to reflect current scholarship along with new chapters that bring fresh perspectives on a diverse range of topics, including new scientific approaches and disciplines and non-Christian traditions such as Judaism, Islam, Asiatic religions, and atheism. This indispensible classroom guide is now more useful than ever before. Contributors: Richard J. Blackwell, Peter J. Bowler, John Hedley Brooke, Glen M. Cooper, Edward B. This book will take you on a journey into the history of mankind, where no man has gone before. It will answer questions humans have been asking for centuries. Questions such as: What's God's role in our history? Who are Adam and Eve? Were they a result of a natural evolution or a revolution? Who was the woman Cain married, and who are her people? Who are the Angels, and what world did they come from? Are they among us today? Why did the Exodus occur? Who was the Pharaoh? Why Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and the Eastern religions, in other words why religion? Why the races? Where did they come from? Who's behind these religions? What does God want from us? In this book, I will provide unconventional answers, to all these questions and more. The reader is guaranteed new ideas, and conclusions in the matter of our history, religion, and our raison d'être. All the evidence furnished in this book is based on scientific, historical, and religious books, besides logic. We will walk together through history, with a lot of emphasis on the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Koran, along with some other religious books. Through this journey, I will present to you an alternative explanation of history, different than what we were led to believe from our history books. This will shed some light on what we are, who we are, and what's our purpose of existence. My goal is to show you there's a higher power that controls our lives, and our destinies, for an ultimate purpose. After examining all the evidence I will provide, I hope you will come to the same conclusions I did. There was a beginning, and there shall be an end. Together we will examine historical facts, which will prove my theories. My ideas became more concentrated in the last six years, when I started getting heavily interested in history, and I was exposed to information in science and religion. People think science and the idea of a God don't match, on the contrary, if there is a God, then He is the one that invented science. Science must prove His existence or not. I found points that link the three together. A new revelation came to me of what the real history is, and the truth behind it. To my amazement, I found all the things I've talked about through the years were coming together, and everything became clearer to me. I saw through a lens of a camera, an upside down picture of our history. Things were not as it seemed. Going back in history was an attempt to understand what God really wanted from us. I had to find out for myself. Did He really leave us without religious guidance, from the start of humanity until Jesus? With the exception of Moses and the Hebrew people, God forgot or didn't care about the rest of the humans? I hope my findings I laid down in this book, will help uncover the truth. We know what we know, because someone taught us the science behind our knowledge. We found what we found, because someone allowed us to find it. The danger arises when people come to believe their belief is the only true one. They believe they're the only ones who understand God and His wishes, and therefore, they have the right to act in support of that belief. They try to impose their belief on others by any means available to them. Religion has been gaining a lot of ground in the last few years. Elections have been won and lost, not because of your political stance or confidence, but rather on your religious beliefs. Under which divine laws, do the gods of Egypt be exempted from insults? This is the question to ask. Anyone who feels he's higher than the Almighty Himself, or his Prophet, or even the Khalifa Omar, has the right to be exempted from insults. Otherwise, step aside. God and His Prophet allowed people Freedom of Speech. This means the freedom to say anything they want, with no risk of earthly punishment. Who are you to take that freedom from them? God and His prophet gave the people the freedom of belief, worship, and speech!
