Aerothermodynamic tests of Phase B space shuttle configurations proposed by McDonnell Douglas--Martin Marietta were conducted at Mach numbers 8 and 10.5. Test conditions provided both Mach number and Reynolds number simulation for typical ascent and reentry trajectories. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the major test results and also presents data comparisons with theoretical calculations. Specific areas covered are ascent heating and shock interference, booster reentry heating and flow fields, and orbiter reentry analysis which includes leeside heating, windward shock angles and flow fields, windward surface heating, and boundary-layer transition.

Programmes for Animation: A Handbook for Animation Technicians is a handbook on animation containing a list of 57 programs for use on a programmable calculator. Each program is preceded by explanations of how the necessary mathematical formulas were derived; each step of the program is also accompanied by a brief explanation. The programs are intended for the Hewlett-Packard HP-97 calculator, and can also be used on the HP-67 pocket calculator. Comprised of 17 chapters, this book begins by giving sufficient information about the functions of the keys of the calculator. The discussion then turns to field widths and zoom counter readings; the field chart and coordinate systems; and lens and table off-sets. Subsequent chapters deal with linear movements and fairings; exponential movements; middle fairings and co-fairings; rotations and circular pans; and simple harmonic motion. Exposures at different field widths are also explained, along with zooms using several pieces of artwork and movements along a curve. The book concludes by describing two-lens aerial image projection. This monograph was written specifically for animation technicians.

With the pressure of time-based competition increasing, and customers demanding faster service, availability of service parts becomes a critical component of manufacturing and servicing operations. Service Parts Management first focuses on intermittent demand forecasting and then on the management of service parts inventories. It guides researchers and practitioners in finding better management solutions to their problems and is both an excellent reference for key concepts and a leading resource for further research. Demand forecasting techniques are presented for parametric and nonparametric approaches, and multi echelon cases and inventory pooling are also considered. Inventory control is examined in the continuous and periodic review cases, while the following are all examined in the context of forecasting: • error measures, • distributional assumptions, and • decision trees. Service Parts Management provides the reader with an overview and a detailed treatment of the current state of the research available on the forecasting and inventory management of items with intermittent demand. It is a comprehensive review of service parts management and provides a starting point for researchers, postgraduate students, and anyone interested in forecasting or managing inventory.

Industrial Applications of Renewable Plastics: Environmental, Technological, and Economic Advances provides practical information to help engineers and materials scientists deploy renewable plastics in the plastics market. It explores the uses, possibilities, and problems of renewable plastics and composites to assist in material selection and rejection. The designer’s main problems are examined, along with basic reminders that deal with structures and processing methods that can help those who are generally familiar with metals understand the unique properties of plastic materials. The book offers a candid overview of main issues, including conservation of fossil resources, geopolitical considerations, greenhouse effects, competition with food crops, deforestation, pollution, and disposal of renewable plastics. In addition, an overview of some tools related to sustainability (Life cycle assessments, CO2 emissions, carbon footprint, and more) is provided. The book is an essential resource for engineers and materials scientists involved in material selection, design, manufacturing, molding, fabrication, and other links in the supply chain of plastics. The material contained is of great relevance to many major industries, including automotive and transport, packaging, aeronautics, shipbuilding, industrial and military equipment, electrical and electronics, energy, and more. Provides key, enabling information for engineers and materials scientists looking to increase the use of renewable plastic materials in their work Presents practical guidance to assist in materials selection, processing methods, and applications development, particularly for designers more familiar with other materials, such as metals Includes a candid discussion of the pros and cons of using renewable plastics, considering the technical, economic, legal, and environmental aspects

During the past two decades, higher processing temperatures, more efficient engines at higher temperatures, and the use of a vacuum environment have led to the development of a number of important processing, fabrication, and industrial techniques, resulting in new material forms including: matrix composites, nano- and functionally graded structures, plastics, smart piezoelectric materials, shape memory alloys, intermetallics, ceramics, and fullerenes. The second edition of this encyclopedia covers the new materials that have been invented or modified in recent years and updates information on basic materials as well. Encyclopedia of Materials, Parts, and Finishes, Second Edition brings together in one concise volume the most up-to-date information on materials, forms and parts, finishes, and processes utilized in the industry. There is not a handbook currently on the market that incorporates as much materials information in one volume. The coverage of materials usage extends from the breadth of military and aerospace materials to commercial (aircraft, automotive, electronics) and basic materials (wood, rubber, etc.). Each entry provides thorough, straightforward definitions along with examples of corresponding materials, parts, or finishes. Like its predecessor, this encyclopedia will be an invaluable reference that belongs on the desk of every materials scientist and engineer.
