For this report, we examined whether or not using a realistic job preview (RJP) in the Army recruiter training process would improve recruiter performance, retention, and/or ability to deal with job stress. To this end, we (1) briefly describes Army recruiter training and the recruiting job itself, (2) describe how and why RPs work (3) consider whether RJPs would help in the Army recruiter training process and (4) discuss implementing and evaluating an Army recruiter RJP program. We conclude that RJPs could be quite useful in helping to retain and attract recruiters. However, our recommendation hinges on the Army (1) determining appropriate RJP outcomes, and (2) taking steps to reduce negative job features. Realistic job preview, Training, Socialization, Army recruiters.

"This is an annotated bibliography of research conducted on military recruiting by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI), the other U.S. military services, and foreign military organizations. To provide a framework for the research summaries, they are organized around a model of military recruitment showing the important factors contributing to successful recruiting. The model contains the following factors: (1) personnel selection and assessment; (2) training and development; (3) recruiting management and organization; (4) recruiter performance; (3) marketing; (6) youth supply, characteristics, and influencers; (7) propensity; (8) enlistment decisions; and (9) delayed entry programs. One hundred fifty-one reports are summarized, describing recruiting research most relevant to the current U.S. military recruiting environment. It is hoped that the review provides a comprehensive yet concise picture of the research results generated by the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and foreign service recruiting research communities."--DTIC.

"This is an annotated bibliography of research by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) on Army recruiting. Most of the research covered in this report was conducted during the period 1980 and 1999. To provide a framework for this work the research summaries are organized around a model of Army recruitment showing the important factors contributing to successful recruiting. In the model, recruiter production is conceptualized as a joint function of recruiter performance and youths' propensity to enlist. Propensity to enlist is linked to advertising effects and several other environmental factors. Recruiters' performance, in turn, is influenced by their personal characteristics, the training and mentoring they receive, and the level of technical and organizational Support provided to them. The ARI research relating to each of these major components in the recruitment model is documented in this report."--DTIC.

"This report documents research to evaluate a realistic job preview (RJP) booklet for soldiers and families interested in U.S. Army Special Forces (SF). The RIP provides accurate, detailed information about important aspects of SF jobs. Recruiters began distributing it in 1994 to potential recruits to encourage informed decisions about joining SF and to help prepare those who volunteer. The evaluation objectives were to: (1) assess and describe booklet implementation, (2) assess the impact on recruits' commitment to joining SF, and (3) document ideas for improvement. We collected survey data from recruiters and from new recruits before and after booklet fielding. The data showed that soldiers who received and read the RJP booklet tended to be located at posts with a strong SF presence and tended to be relatively knowledgeable about SF. The selective nature of our sample of booklet readers made interpretation of the evaluation data difficult. However, the RJP appeared to provide new and important information that was often used in the decision process. Wives in particular seem to have benefited from the information. Recruiters and soldiers reacted favorably overall. The findings supported continuation of the booklet with modifications such as additional detail on Family Support Groups and deployments, and minor formatting changes."--DTIC.

This report presents in briefing form a summary of the research conducted by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) on Army recruiting and selected recruiting research from other Service laboratories. The briefing is organized around a model of Army recruitment that shows the important factors contributing to successful recruiting. The first section of the briefing outlines and explains the model and the subsequent sections review the research pertinent to each section of the model. The briefing concludes with summaries of the research findings in each area and directions for future research.
