Many old riveted railway bridges are replaced too soon due to a general lack of knowledge about the expected life span. This indicates the need for more information on fatigue and brittle fracture of riveted bridges. This book unveils extensive research and literature results on riveted bridges' fatigue live and shows how to take fatigue properly i

The remaining fatigue life of riveted structures is a topic of considerable importance, particularly for owners of bridges. Improved methods for the estimation of the actual fatigue life of such structures are required in order to make their continued safe use possible while at the same time avoiding the expense of unnecessary repairs. To evaluate fatigue life expectancy of a structural detail, it is necessary to obtain an accurate estimate of the stress history. Two analytical models are assessed through comparison with measured strains taken from a bridge in service. The results illustrate that a simple model with pinned connections is adequate for the determination of stresses in truss members and that more advance analysis methods give only marginal increases in accuracy. Stressed in the floor system are most accurately predicted by a model that has full bending moment continuity between connected members. Standard and advanced methods of fatigue life evaluation are discussed and are then implemented in the evaluation of the remaining fatigue life for components of the bridge. Comparison with the actual fatigue life of the components, which were obtained from laboratory experiments, shows that both prediction methods give reasonable estimates of the fatigue life.

Rehabilitation of Metallic Structural Systems Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites, Second Edition provides comprehensive knowledge on the application of FRPs in various types of metallic field structures. Part I provides an overview of the various types of materials and systems and discusses the durability of bonds. Part II focuses on materials-level considerations, such as corrosion and mechanical behavior, putty effects on the effectiveness of pipeline systems, laser joining and the use of carbon and basalt FRP for underwater repair. Building on Part II, the final three sections focus on applications of FRP composites to steel components and various infrastructure systems. This book will be a standard reference for civil engineers, designers, materials scientists, and other professionals who are involved in the rehabilitation of metallic structures using fiber reinforced polymer composites. Contains eighteen new chapters covering materials-level aspects and applications Presents materials developments for tailored bonds, durability, and bond behavior Includes methods of analysis, testing, and implementation across a broad range of sectors Covers design aspects, guidelines, and codes Discusses economic aspects and future prospects

Maintenance, Safety, Risk, Management and Life-Cycle Performance of Bridges contains lectures and papers presented at the Ninth International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management (IABMAS 2018), held in Melbourne, Australia, 9-13 July 2018. This volume consists of a book of extended abstracts and a USB card containing the full papers of 393 contributions presented at IABMAS 2018, including the T.Y. Lin Lecture, 10 Keynote Lectures, and 382 technical papers from 40 countries. The contributions presented at IABMAS 2018 deal with the state of the art as well as emerging concepts and innovative applications related to the main aspects of bridge maintenance, safety, risk, management and life-cycle performance. Major topics include: new design methods, bridge codes, heavy vehicle and load models, bridge management systems, prediction of future traffic models, service life prediction, residual service life, sustainability and life-cycle assessments, maintenance strategies, bridge diagnostics, health monitoring, non-destructive testing, field testing, safety and serviceability, assessment and evaluation, damage identification, deterioration modelling, repair and retrofitting strategies, bridge reliability, fatigue and corrosion, extreme loads, advanced experimental simulations, and advanced computer simulations, among others. This volume provides both an up-to-date overview of the field of bridge engineering and significant contributions to the process of more rational decision-making on bridge maintenance, safety, risk, management and life-cycle performance of bridges for the purpose of enhancing the welfare of society. The Editors hope that these Proceedings will serve as a valuable reference to all concerned with bridge structure and infrastructure systems, including students, researchers and engineers from all areas of bridge engineering.
