Excerpt from Examination of Two English Dramas: The Tragedy of Mariam by Elizabeth Carew; And the True Tragedy of Herod and Antipater With the Death of Faire Marriam by Gervase Markham, and William Sampson A general survey of all dramas dealing with Herod and Mariamne has been given by Landau (Die Dramen von Herodes und Mariamne. Zeitschrift für vergleichende Literaturgeschichte, ed. Koch. Neue Folge Bd. VIII und IX. Weimar 1895/96), and three English dramas founded on the same story, viz. Massinger's Duke of Milan (1623), Fenton's Mariamne (1723), and Stephen Phillips' Herod (1901) have been discussed by W. Grack in his "Studien über die dramatische Behandlung der Geschichte von Herodes und Mariamne in der englischen und deutschen Literatur." Konigsberg 1901. Further a drama by Boyle, "Herod the Great" (printed 1694) has been treated by Siegert in "Roger Boyle, Earl of Orrery" (Wien und Leipzig, 1906). Of the dramas by Elizabeth Carew (printed 1613) and by Markham and Sampson (printed 1622), very few copies exist, with the result that they have not yet been fully examined. Landau has little to say of the drama by Markham and Sampson, and was unable to read more than the opening passage of Elizabeth Carew's drama. Grack and Siegert were unable to obtain copies of these works. These dramas however deserve consideration, because they are the earliest English dramas treating the story of Herod and Mariamne. They are also particularly interesting because of their form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book investigates the complex interactions, through experiencing drama, of readers and audiences in the English Renaissance. Around 1500 an absolute majority of population was illiterate. Henry VIII’s religious reformation changed this cultural structure of society. ‘The Act for the Advancement of True Religion’ of 1543, which prohibited the people belonging to the lower classes of society as well as women from reading the Bible, rather suggests that there already existed a number of these folks actively engaged in reading. The Act did not ban the works of Chaucer and Gower and stories of men’s lives – good reading for them. The successive sovereigns’ educational policies also contributed to rising literacy. This trend was speeded up by London’s growing population which invited the rise of commercial playhouses since 1567. Every citizen saw on average about seven performances every year: that is, about three per cent of London’s population saw a performance a day. From 1586 onwards merchants’ appearance in best-seller literature began to increase while stage representation of reading/writing scenes also increased and stimulated audiences towards reading. This was spurred by standardisation of the printing format of playbooks in the early 1580s and play-minded readers went to playbooks, eventually to create a class of playbook readers. Late in the 1590s, at last, playbooks matched with prose writings in ratio to all publications. Parts I and II of this book discuss these topics in numerical terms as much as possible and Part III discusses some monumental characteristics of contemporary readers of Chapman, Ford, Marston and Shakespeare.
