This volume contains the papers that will be presented at 'EMC '91 '-the European Metals Conference-to be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 15 to 20 September 1991, and organized by Benelux Metallurgie, GDMB (Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhutten und Bergleute) and IMM (the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy). 'EMC '91' is the first of an intended major series organized at the European level with the aim of bringing together all those who are involved with the extraction and processing of non-ferrous metals-European metallurgists and their international colleagues-to provide them with the opportunity to exchange views on the state and evolution of their industry. The programme covers all the different aspects of the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals from mining to fabricated products. Particular attention is being paid to the European non -ferrous industry with respect to changes in demand, the technology used, pressures on the environment and the competitive position of manufacturers. The contributions of the plenary lecturers (copies of which will appear in the IMM journal Minerals Industry International in 1991-92) and the many authors are gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are also due to the referees of the papers, the sponsors, the companies that have allowed registrants to visit their operations, the chairmen of the technical sessions and the staffs of the organizing bodies for their efficient administrative work. This book is aimed to compile the distribution of rare earth elements in various resources with their processing from secondary resources. It includes details of various processes developed for extraction of rare earth elements from varied raw materials ranging from e-wastes, tailings, process wastes and residues. It emphasizes importance of processing of the secondary resources to assist environmental remediation of such untreated wastes and get finished products. It covers all aspects of rare metals and rare earth metals in one volume covering extraction, separation and recycling of secondary resources for extraction of these metals along with relevant case studies.

"Heavy Metals: Problems and Solutions" is divided into three sections dealing with basic geochemical processes, remediation and case studies. The basic geochemical processes are discussed with respect to mobility in the environment and impact as well as methods to derive guidelines for heavy metals. Remediation focuses on currently available methods to treat contaminated sediments and soils. In addition, it considers the concept of geochemical engineering for remediation of large areas contaminated by metals. A number of case studies of polluted sediments and soils and their environmental impact highlight the principles discussed in the first two sections.

Bioremediation techniques for treating metals-contaminated soil and water are in an emerging state of development. Unlike organic compounds that can be broken down into harmless compounds such as CO2 and water, metals and their salts generally inhibit biological activity. They must be converted into more complex states, be sorbed, or undergo valence state changes before biodegradation by activated sludge treatment or other complex reactions such as air stripping can occur. This book introduces various treatment technologies and options for the bioremediation of metals. The chapters, written by researchers and practitioners from North America and Europe, represent the most recent compilation of state-of-the-art techniques and methods for metals biotreatment. These topics and more are addressed:

Part of Groundwater Set - Buy all six books and save over 30% on buying separately! Biffaward Winner 2002 The Clean Rivers Trust has fought off stiff competition to become the Research and Development - Technology Category winner at the Biffaward Awards 2002, with its project "Technology Analysis of Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Methods". Minewater Treatment - Technology, Application and Policy, was produced based on the findings of the research to aid in the selection, design and implementation of the most appropriate treatment techniques for particular minewater discharges. Much work has been carried out in recent decades concerning minewater treatment, both in the UK and worldwide. Many different bodies and organizations are involved in developing minewater treatment processes and schemes. Minewater Treatment addresses the need for a single source of state-of-the-art information that draws all the latest research material together. Key features of the book include: a full literature review of minewater treatment throughout the world an overview of relevant legislation and policy in a global context a review of currently available methods for treating minewater worldwide a site specific inventory of minewater treatment schemes within the UK, including compilation of available monitoring data and assessment of performance a review of emerging and innovative minewater treatment technologies and consideration of related academic research within the UK a comprehensive list of active and innovative minewater treatment technologies that are not currently compiled in a book or other review publication a detailed summary and recommendations section assessing the applicability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of minewater treatment schemes Relevant scientific subject matter is presented in a concise, easily accessible manner to assist with the objective assessment of the progress made to date. Heavily illustrated with many colour photographs, the book allows best use to be made of the collective experience of minewater treatment practitioners throughout the UK, whilst at the same time placing the UK experience within a global context. An invaluable reference work for mining companies, consultants, planning officers, environmental research scientists, environmental agencies, water utilities and regulatory bodies, Minewater Treatment is a definitive source of information on minewater treatment technologies and will help facilitate the selection of the most appropriate technique required to tackle particular minewater discharge problems.
