Download Early Elizabethan Tragedies of the Inns of Court Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Originally published in 1987, this book is a chronologically horiztonal study of many aspects of one group of tragedies, written under similar conditions during a short period of time: the Elizabethan tragedies of the inns of court. The plays produced by members of the Inns of Court have long been recognized as seminal in the development of Elizabethan tragedy, and include the earliest formal dramatic tragedy in English. The book includes chapters on plot construction, characters and characterization and ethical significance.

Download Three Elizabethan Domestic Tragedies Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Elizabethan domestic tragedies depicted the workings of Fortune in the lives of ordinary people, telling stories of sin, discovery, punishment and divine mercy, with their settings and characterization often enhanced by a highly entertaining blend of realism and sensationalism. Only some half-dozen survive to offset the dramas of kings and nobles in the tragedies of Shakespeare and his peers. They combined journalism and entertainment with a didactic concern, and their plots were often derived from contemporary events. Arden of Faversham (1592) and A Yorkshire Tragedy (1608) are both based on chronicles or pamphlets describing authentic murders, while A Woman Killed with Kindness (1603) by Thomas Heywood is a fictional creation, considered his masterpiece.

Download Themes and Conventions of Elizabethan Tragedy Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The first edition of this book formed the basis of the modern approach to Elizabethan poetic drama as a performing art, an approach pursued in subsequent volumes by Professor Bradbrook. Its influence has also extended to other fields; it has been studied by Grigori Kozintsev and Sergei Eisenstein for instance. Conventions of open stage, stylized plot and characters, and actors' traditions of presentation are realted to the special expectations which a rhetorical training produced in the listeners. The general discussion of tragic conventions is followed by individual studies of how these were used by Marlowe, Tourneur, Webster and Middleton. For this second edition, Professor Bradbrook has revised her material and written a new introduction. A new final chapter on performance and characterization describes the conventions of role-playing. Dramatists before and after Shakespeare are compared with him in their methods of showing a complex identity on stage. This chapter also considers the work of Marston, Chapman and Ford in relation to the themes and conventions studied in earlier chapters.
