The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon. Imbabura Kichwa (IK) is one of the most important indigenous languages of Ecuador. IK is the northermost Ecuadorean Kichwa variety. Although it has a very good number of speakers (around 150,000), IK is one of the less studied languages in linguistic terms. Ecuadorean Kichwa, and specifically Ecuadorean Highland Kichwa show that there is very little morphological variation within its sub-varieties. However, there are visible differences at the phonological level. Imbabura Kichwa shows this variation to be more prominent than in other varieties. These differences among Ecuadorean Kichwa sub-varieties haven’t been studied thoroughly. In this report, I will explain the phonological structure of Imbabura Kichwa. The main goal is to analyze and understand how the sounds are distributed throughout the language. To do so, I will describe the syllable structure and stress pattern of the language in addition to the phonemic realizations of IK. Allophonic variations and the rules explaining the environments in which they occur will also be covered. Knowing the phonological structure of this language is crucial for future studies on morphology, syntax and semantics.

Quechua Expressions of Stance and Deixis explores the semantics and pragmatics of Southern Quechua and Ecuadorian Quichua expressions, considered as markers of stance and deixis. This volume is the first to study a broad range of stance/deictic phenomena in Peruvian and Bolivian Quechua and Ecuadorian Quichua in-depth, with examples that have been elicited as well as captured from natural discourse. Each chapter investigates these expressions through fieldwork and experimental studies, many employing original methodologies. As such, this work stands as an important contribution to the study of an endangered language.

In Amazonian Quichua Language and Life: Introduction to Grammar, Ecology, and Discourse from Pastaza and Upper Napo, Janis B. Nuckolls and Tod D. Swanson discuss two varieties of Quichua, an indigenous Ecuadorian language. Drawing on their linguistic and anthropological knowledge, extensive fieldwork, and personal relationships with generations of speakers from Pastaza and Napo communities, the authors open a door into worlds of intimate meaning that knowledge of Quichua makes accessible. Nuckolls and Swanson link grammatical lessons with examples of naturally occurring discourse, traditional narratives, conversations, songs, and personal experiences to teach readers about the languages’ structures and discourse patterns and speakers’ sensory depictions, ecological aesthetics, and emotional perspectives.
