This volume of the study to define the economic implications of a United States supersonic transport aircraft (SST) describes the major costs associated with necessary modifications to enroute support services. The degree of responsiveness of existing capabilities to the needs of the larger, faster, higher-flying aircraft which will join free world airfleets by 1975 is examined in relation to airways, navigation and communications, meteorology, and radiation. Proposed and evolutionary successor systems are identified. The nature and extent of improvements planned and the costs of their development, fabrication and installation are presented and discussed as related to the needs of the four advanced high-capacity aircraft types: stretched subsonics (DC-8-63), high-capacity subsonics (B-747), Concorde, United States SST. The economic impact of advanced high-capacity airliners upon the ground-environment--airports and terminals--is examined in this volume. The modifications required to achieve compatibility with each of the four airliners: stretched subsonic (DC-8-63), high-capacity subsonic (B-747), Concorde, United States SST which will enter commercial service up to 1975 are defined for selected airports, and the costs of the aircraft-sponsored improvements are estimated. The report defines the economic implications to government and local agencies of modifications to airports, terminals, and enroute support facilities as a result of the introduction of a United States supersonic transport aircraft (SST) into scheduled commercial service by United States and foreign carriers. Costs associated with modifications to the ground environment and enroute support services which advanced, high-capacity commercial transport aircraft may require are identified. Only those improvement programs beyond the normal planning responses to increased traffic and technology advancements are attributed to the larger, faster airliners which will fly within the next 9 years. The costs of these aircraft-sponsored modification programs are allocated among the four competing aircraft: stretched subsonic (DC-8-63), high-capacity subsonics (B-747 and L-500), Concorde, and United States SST.
