How were we to supply our "extra diet" kitchen, how prepare the food on which so many depended? The erection of a shed in the barrack-yard was immediately set on foot; but it took ten days ere we gained possession of it, and our only resource was three or four small charcoal brasiers. Charcoal always drawing so much more quickly in the open air, we placed them in the barrack-yard. 112 UNPROPITIOUS HOURS. "Misfortunes never come singly;" so we thought when John, the soldier cook, fell sick and had to go into the fever ward.
