Harkness, a medieval peasant with a millennial’s mindset, is quite happy to sit back and make quips while everyone else does the hard work. His calculated laziness is interrupted when the gods send an ancient and terrible scourge-by-dragonfire upon his village, and he is forced (peer-pressured, really) into trying to save his fiancée from the dragon who has kidnapped her. When Harkness is sent by the village elder to find the one weapon that is capable of killing the beast, his real plan is to go off on his own and use his village’s money to live the high life. This, of course, would require ditching his two companions: Karla, an aspiring troubadour whose passion makes up for her lack of adventuring skills, and Aldric, whose kindheartedness does not make up for his lack of intelligence. Harkness sees this journey as a paid vacation under the pretense of world-saving, but it quickly turns serious when he realizes what’s at stake when he is forced to actually care about something—or at the very least, pretend to.

An exploration of how the image and idea of the dragon has evolved through history How did the dragon get its wings? Everyone in the modern West has a clear idea of what a dragon looks like and of the sorts of stories it inhabits, not least devotees of the fantasies of J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, and George R. R. Martin. A cross between a snake and some fearsome mammal, often sporting colossal wings, they live in caves, lie on treasure, maraud, and breathe fire. They are extraordinarily powerful, but even so, ultimately defeated in their battles with humans. What is the origin of this creature? The Dragon in the West is the first serious and substantial account in any language of the evolution of the modern dragon from its ancient forebears. Daniel Ogden's detailed exploration begins with the drakōn of Greek myth and the draco of the dragon-loving Romans, and a look at the ancient world's female dragons. It brings the story forwards though Christian writings, medieval illustrated manuscripts, and the lives of dragon-duelling saints, before concluding with a study of dragons found in the medieval Germanic world, including those of the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf and the Norse sagas.

Welcome to the Crossroads, where dragons, shape-shifters, and witches are real and the paranormal is normal, in this award-winning series by Jennifer Ashley w/a Allyson James. I say my Crossroads Hotel gives the magical a refuge, but things are going too far, too fast. First, Drake, one of the dragons I’ve tangled with in the past, shows up with a dragon egg, of all things, asking me to guard it from all comers. This is after the sheriff’s grandfather nearly wrecks on my front door and begs me for a place to hole up. Not only that, but my grandmother has a new ally, a mysterious crow Changer, who might be more dangerously powerful than we know. When the dragon egg proves to be more important that Drake is letting on, Mick and I embark on a quest to discover who murdered the kid’s mother, and what new and dangerous foe will stop at nothing to eliminate me, Mick, and my friends and family to obtain the egg and begin the destruction of all dragon-kind.
