Excerpt from Dr. Sevier He changed in later years; this was in 1856. To resist not evil seemed to him then only a rather feeble sort of knavery. To face it in its nakedness, and to inveigh against it in high places and low, seemed the consummation of all manliness; and manliness was the keynote of his creed. There was no other necessity in this life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from John Sevier: Citizen, Soldier, Legislator, Governor, Statesman; 1744 1815 Great victory like Yorktown or New Orleans. He was not a great general-for he had no chance to he-like Washington. Jackson. Or Scott. He was no braver than Shelby or Tipton: in intellect he was not the superior of James Robertson; in statesmanship he was no greater than several others: in learning he was not distinguished. And in polish and courtly grace he was interior to William Blount. Yet none of these. Nor any of his associates. Not even General Jackson. Ever held the people of every condition by such a magic spell. By such a hand of love. None of them became. As he. A consecrated name in every home. The very. Excerpt from John Sevier as a Commonwealth-Builder: A Sequel to the Rearguard of the Revolution The materials from which this volume has been constructed have been, in part, the same as those I employed in writing a preceding book upon the same subject, under the title of "The Rear-Guard of the Revolution." But this work goes over later and more thoroughly tilled ground than that, and hence I have had for it a wider range of authorities. Briefly stated, my sources of information have been, first and primarily, lengthy conversations with Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey, of Knoxville, Tennessee, during which his "Annals of Tennessee" was used somewhat in the manner of a text-book - Dr. Ramsey pointing out its inaccuracies, amplifying its narrative with interesting details, and relating to me such additional facts as he had gathered during the nearly thirty years since the writing of his history. He was a man of rare culture and trained intellect, and, by the character of his mind, was peculiarly qualified for historical investigation. When I knew him, he had given fifty years of his life to the study of this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dr. Summers: A Life Story This book has been written at the request of the family of Dr. Summers and others whose opinions and wishes were entitled to my respect. My aim has been to picture the man as he was. The life of my departed friend had its sad side. Is not this true of most lives that have been notably noble and fruitful? The supremo motive in writing the book was to glorify God, and not a man; yet it has been a labor of love. It is sent forth with the earnest prayer that it may do some good.
