The dith culties of forming an Index, of this kind, were greatly enhanced by the circumflance of the Hundreds of this County being omitted in Domefday. For, untot tunately, the Manors and Bfiates in Wiltihire are not therein arranged under their refpeetive Hundreds, as they are in' many other Counties, and, thctcfore, it was tfometimes necell'ary for the Editor, to (catch the county at large, for a fynonymous appellation, when, if the place had been allotted to, it's proper Hundred, the defcription alone might have immediately led him to it's certain difcovery.
