"There are currently many emerging technologies in the areas of communication and computer-aided design that can play a role in aiding the designer or design team with their work in the field of industrial design. Successful adoption of these new technologies by the field of industrial design may depend upon identification and understanding of these technologies, knowledge of current practices within the field, knowledge of areas of potential use and early adoption, [and] identification of common components of a design process that can be used as a framework to propose and adapt new tools and technologies. The first section of this thesis begins by presenting a brief overview of several emerging technologies representing a range of new capabilities that could be molded into tools for the designer/design team in their development work. The second section of this thesis explores daily practice in the field. Designers at a variety of corporate and private design firms were interviewed to obtain a snapshot of current practices and insights regarding future direction for the field of industrial design. The wide variety of designers interviewed also provided valuable input for identifying common processes and methodologies. The third section introduces a high level common design process model based on input from the design practice interviews. The common model is used as a framework for proposals in the last section. The fourth and last section represents the main focus of this thesis. Here, each component of the design model is represented individually with proposals for new tools and/or methodologies to help the designer with development, evaluation and delivery of their creative work"--Abstract.

Digital design tools and techniques facilitate efficiency gains, shorten development times, and aid collaboration between members of product development teams. As the range of digital tools available to the industrial designer increases, the aim of this research was to investigate the viability of a totally digital industrial design strategy and opportunities to employ the methods in design education. Published literature indicated a general lack of research in the use of digital design tools and media by industrial design students and practitioners. This research employed empirical surveys, which indicated that whilst the use of digital methods increased as the design solution progressed, practitioners were using digital tools/media more extensively than the students. The findings also revealed a negative reaction to a completely digital industrial design strategy and curriculum, despite the fact that the majority of practitioners believed. in the capacity of digital tools/media to replace conventional methods. Losing the spontaneity of paper-based sketching was identified as the main concern about a totally digital process and this issue was further investigated through a case study in which industrial/product design students employed the Tablet PC as a tool for concept generation. Student responses indicated overwhelmingly positive attitudes towards the use and capabilities of the Tablet PC as a tool for digital sketching and its use as a self-contained design tool. Following the first phase of empirical studies, a draft digital industrial design strategy was devised and presented to graduating students, academics and practitioners for feedback. Findings revealed that the majority of graduating students were receptive to the strategy and modifications applied in response to feedback. The research concludes that industrial design programmes are failing to fully avail of the breadth of advanced and emerging digital technologies that can be used during practice. Despite the fact that the majority of interviewees felt that the digital industrial design strategy was feasible, cost and the resistance of academics who had an interest in the use of conventional tools was holding back educational progress. Recommendations for curriculum development have been identified for a more extensive introduction to, and use of, digital tools.

Digital fabrication has played a pivotal role in providing reality to industrial designers' ideas since its first commercial use in late 80's. Making the final prototype of a design project has been the initial assumed use for these technologies in the design process. However, new technology advances in this area offer further opportunities for designers. In this research these opportunities have been carefully explored. This research will be conceptualized through discussing the findings of a case study and theories in the areas of industrial design methodology, digital fabrication, and design pedagogy. Considering the span of digital fabrication capabilities, this research intends to look into the design-fabrication relation from a methodology perspective and attempts to answer the question of how the digital fabrication methods can be integrated into the industrial design process to increase the tangibility of the design process in very first steps. It will be argued that the above is achievable in certain design topics - i.e. those with known components but unknown architecture. This will be studied through the development of series of hypothetical design processes emphasizing the role of digital fabrication as an ideation tool rather than a presentation tool. In this case study, two differing processes have been developed and given to industrial design students to design specific power tools. One of them is developed based on the precedence of digital fabrication. Then the outcome of the two processes is compared and evaluated. This research will introduce the advantages of using the digital fabrication techniques as a powerful ideation tool, which overcomes the imagination problems in many of complicated design topics. More importantly, this study suggests the criteria of selecting the proposed design methodology. It is hoped that these findings along with the advances in the area of additive and subtractive fabrication will assist industrial designers to create unique methodologies to deal with complicated needs both in practice and design education.
