Diary of an autodidact, a unique and different book that shares unimaginable experiences of its own author, Wangeli Chaaraoui.A book different than those you have read so far, where its author reflects on our trip to Earth. A before and after life and death. The author, Wangeli Chaaraoui, presents his book "Diary of an autodidact" (Amazon, 2018), a journey where experiences, reflections and thoughts are combined through his eyes. A man who, fleeing from his native land because of the war, has fought to survive in extreme conditions. Its pages denote a constant mystery conceived by our future, where the pursuit of happiness takes the center stage."Every day, the desire of surviving, of rising and being reborn from its own ashes - like the phoenix - is renewed on the daily struggle and the ideas that arise every day when you wake up in the morning after taking a relaxing bath. Without struggles and with no desire to fight and overcome our own weaknesses, we humans cannot evolve. We are obliged to face our daily problems that arise on a daily basis by the circumstances of our life and also because of our weaknesses. Many times we do not feel strong enough to face those problems that represent an obstacle that blocks our life and our evolution, our inner and outer growth, our progress towards the goal, where we want to reach or where we could reach. We also want to increase our mental and material productivity, expand our intellectual knowledge and our spiritual vision of the world around us. We want to advance in the long way of our life, giving, every day, a further step towards our final goal." Fragment of the book. The author intends with this book to answer the greatest unresolved mysteries of our history, what purpose inundates us and the almost perceptible horizon of humanity. About the authorWangeli Chaaraoui was born in Beirut (Lebanon) in 1954 into a Greco-Lebanese family. From his childhood he had close contact with his father, who owned a distillery in Beirut, where he had his first laboratory at the age of 12. He then made a long boat trip from Beirut to Piraeus (Greece) via Alexandria (Egypt) in 1966, where he spent the summer on the island of Salamis. In 1974, he went to Belgium to study at the Catholic University of Leuven, but he was unable to continue his studies because of his father's death in 1976. Suddenly, he embarked on a trip to Casablanca (Morocco) for the first time passing by Spain. Spain fascinated him...

MY HIGH SCHOOL classmates completed four years of college last June, a date at which I too had completed four years of study. Their graduation was greeted by presents, parties and diplomas. Mine never occurred. What studies and studies and never graduates? The answer can be found in one word: autodidact. It can be used to describe anyone who is self-taught, and the self-taught are almost anyone. There have been autodidacts of every type: the father of our country (George Washington) and quite a few barons of industry (Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller); autodidacts interested in getting there (Henry Ford, the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart) and those who created the music to carry us along (John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland); novelists (Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens); playwrights (Noel Coward, Clare Boothe Luce, William Saroyan, Tom Stoppard); film makers (D. W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Irving Thalberg), and autodidacts interested in all that and marriage, too (Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon).

Centerburg might be your town. Grampa Hercules and his never-ending tall tales, Dulcy Dooner, the uncooperative citizen, unbusinesslike Uncle Ulysses and his friendly lunchroom, the flustered sheriff, the pompous judge—they are all as American as they come. But there's a subtle and delightful difference. In Centerburg, along with the routine of day-to-day living, the most preposterous things keep happening. But nothing fazes Homer Price! Ragweeds taller than fire ladders, music that sets a whole town dancing—he solves these problems calmly and efficiently. Homer Price is a boy with a good supply of common sense—and ingenuity! Homer's Grampa Hercules is a delightful old rascal and his extravagent reminiscences of his youth are the starting point of many of the episodes. The chapter titles are as enticing as the chapters themselves: The Hide-a-Ride, Looking for Gold, Ever So Much More So, Experiment 13, Grampa Hercules and the Gravitty-Bitties, Pie and Punch and You-Know-Whats. Mr. McCloskey's characters have warmth and kindness and a healthy curiosity; but they are not above a few minor faults and foibles. They are unmistakenably alive. Like Mr. McCloskey himself, they are perpetually amused by the everyday hazards and discrepancies around them.

Written originally for a special issue of The New Yorker and reissued here with a new forward by the author, Within the Context of No Context is George W. S. Trow's brilliant exposition on the state of American culture and twentieth-century life. Published to widespread acclaim, Within the Context of No Context became an immediate classic and is, to this day, a favorite work of writers and critics alike. Both a chilling commentary on the times in which it was written and an eerie premonition of the future, Trow's work locates and traces, describes and analyzes the components of change in contemporary America -- a culture increasingly determined by the shallow worlds of consumer products, daytime television, and celebrity heroes. "This elegant little book is essential reading for anyone interested in the demise, the terminal silliness, of our culture." -- John Irving, The New York Times Book Review; "In this elegant, poignant essay, written with the grace of a master stylist, George Trow articulates the accelerated impermanence of American culture with a precision that is both flaunting and devastating." -- Rudy Wurlitrer; "Within the Context of No Context is a masterpiece of the century that belongs on a shelf next to Theodore Adorno's Minima Moralia and Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle." -- Michael Tolkin; "Within the Context of No Context may appear to be a book of the mind, for it is suffused with such a keen intelligence, but it is actually a book of the heart -- passionate, brave, and stirring." -- Sue Halpern.

"[A] glorious, glittery saga of friendship and loss... I read The Air You Breathe in two nights. (One might say I inhaled it.)." --NPR "Echoes of Elena Ferrante resound in this sumptuous saga."--O, The Oprah Magazine "Enveloping...Peebles understands the shifting currents of female friendship, and she writes so vividly about samba that you close the book certain its heroine's voices must exist beyond the page." -People The story of an intense female friendship fueled by affection, envy and pride--and each woman's fear that she would be nothing without the other. Some friendships, like romance, have the feeling of fate. Skinny, nine-year-old orphaned Dores is working in the kitchen of a sugar plantation in 1930s Brazil when in walks a girl who changes everything. Graça, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy sugar baron, is clever, well fed, pretty, and thrillingly ill behaved. Born to wildly different worlds, Dores and Graça quickly bond over shared mischief, and then, on a deeper level, over music. One has a voice like a songbird; the other feels melodies in her soul and composes lyrics to match. Music will become their shared passion, the source of their partnership and their rivalry, and for each, the only way out of the life to which each was born. But only one of the two is destined to be a star. Their intimate, volatile bond will determine each of their fortunes--and haunt their memories. Traveling from Brazil's inland sugar plantations to the rowdy streets of Rio de Janeiro's famous Lapa neighborhood, from Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood back to the irresistible drumbeat of home, The Air You Breathe unfurls a moving portrait of a lifelong friendship--its unparalleled rewards and lasting losses--and considers what we owe to the relationships that shape our lives.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING TRAVEL MEMOIR What happens when an unadventurous adventure writer tries to re-create the original expedition to Machu Picchu? In 1911, Hiram Bingham III climbed into the Andes Mountains of Peru and “discovered” Machu Picchu. While history has recast Bingham as a villain who stole both priceless artifacts and credit for finding the great archeological site, Mark Adams set out to retrace the explorer’s perilous path in search of the truth—except he’d written about adventure far more than he’d actually lived it. In fact, he’d never even slept in a tent. Turn Right at Machu Picchu is Adams’ fascinating and funny account of his journey through some of the world’s most majestic, historic, and remote landscapes guided only by a hard-as-nails Australian survivalist and one nagging question: Just what was Machu Picchu?
