This candid memoir of a GI serving under Gen. Patton offers a rare glimpse into the realities of life and combat in Europe during WWII. Though Gen. Patton’s army is famous for dashing armored attacks, some of the most intensive fighting of World War II was done by Patton’s infantry—the foot sloggers who were deployed to reduce enemy strong points. This candid account of the US infantry in the European theater takes the reader from the beaches of Normandy to the conquest of Germany—all through the eyes of an infantryman who had the unique perspective of speaking the enemy’s language. A fluent German speaker, Michael Bilder was called upon for interrogations and other special duties. As a combat lifeguard, he also played a key role in successive river crossings. Here, Bilder relates his experiences of infantry life, from German snipers to intoxicated Frenchwomen, to the often morbid humor of combat. He also describes the Battle of Metz in all its horror, as well as the 5th Infantry’s drive into the Bulge, where they faced their first winter battle against enemy veterans of Russia.

...Too many times I was denied this part in the play or that role in the production. I couldn't be a part of this clique or that group. I spent many lonely hours in the midst of a crowd of people, in school, at business gatherings, at church functions. I never could just blend or fit in. Either I was the headliner, or I was forced to take a seat off to the side. I wasn't criticized as much as I was excluded, so I decided to make a few adjustments. I decided to function as support personnel, much like I opted to do in Calvin's businesses. I had no problem with helping in the background; even in that, I seemed to always get noticed or recognized. Sometimes that recognition caused others to perceive me as a threat or pull away from me. Some even found fault and criticized me for nothing. It couldn't just be for nothing; I understood that maybe I gave off some vibe or projected some unacceptable disposition, unconsciously. I always prayed that my heart was pure before God. I figured if my heart gave off a sweet aroma to Him, maybe other people would learn to like me more. I didn't understand it, and I gave up trying. It no longer hurt me as much though; I kind of prepared myself for it, just in case... Young, gifted, talented...and with a slight chip on her shoulder, Janeah Moore feels like a fugitive in her own little world of mediocrity and monotony. In light of the complacency of those around her, she fights tooth and nail to settle for what is before her, imagines an invisible anchor that stabilizers her, makes her look like the others...think like the others...be like the others...a product of 'the assembly line'...in school, in church...in life. To her surprise, Janeah's life comes full circle after a series of hard knocks, mishaps, and unavoidable life lessons that catapult her 'out of the box' into a world wind of fulfillment and obvious destiny. Maneuvered by unseen hands, Janeah learns the importance of embracing her individuality, maximizing her potential, despite opposition, and the essence of what it means to be 'a diamond in the rough' that is fitly groomed and equipped for a purpose beyond anything that she could have ever imagined.

This book exposes the role of children in war, describing where, why, and how children are deployed, the attempts made by international organizations to protect children, and the underlying political and cultural issues that make this such a thorny issue. In conflict-torn countries such as Myanmar and Uganda, the use of child soldiers in military and paramilitary operations continues to occur despite widespread condemnation and the efforts of organizations such as the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. This book will allow readers to grasp the impact of this issue for both individuals and nations worldwide. Child Soldiers: A Reference Handbook traces the evolution of child soldiers from approximately 1940 onwards, covering important historical to modern conflicts. The subject is discussed from a global perspective, with particular attention given to areas where the use of child soldiers is most prevalent. The book covers the complex underlying reasons for the continued use of child soldiers in the modern world, examines the political and psychological consequences of using children—both male and female—in military and paramilitary organizations, and describes how this subject has been addressed by international law and various human rights organizations.

This book weaves a narrative of the history of Sierra Leone, from its foundation as a settlement for black slaves who fought for the British Crown during the American Revolution through the events of the civil war, with a discussion of more general geopolitical lessons to be learned from the recent conflict, its origins, and settlement. In addition, the book contains six appendices that render the present work -- the first comprehensive history of Sierra Leone since the classic studies published more than a generation ago by Christopher Fyfe and John Peterson -- an invaluable reference on conflict resolution in general as well as the West African country in particular, including a chronology of select events in the history of Sierra Leone and the texts of the peace agreements and other post-conflict documents.
