The design of a chiral isoquinoline-based N-heterocyclic carbene was revisited. Two ligands, one containing a Lewis base, were synthesized. The corresponding carbene-metal complexes were then used in different catalytic and asymmetric systems to seek greater reactivity and enantioselectivity. Acyclic diaminocarbene ligands have also a potential in asymmetric synthesis. However, their backbones make it more challenging to control their enantioselectivity. Simple achiral ADC-metal complexes could also achieve good reactivity with a new method of generating them in situ. A new ADC-iridium complex was synthesized and its X-ray structure was obtained showing the presence of only one conformer of the ligand.

Chemistry and Material Sciences naturally depend greatly on Synthesis as the initial stage for the existence of compounds and materials with desired behaviors, within the overall streamline of Design/Synthesis — Properties — Application/Function, and their relations. Such a general approach is of a too wide scope to be properly treated in a single set of publications, but this one on 'Synthesis and Applications in Chemistry and Materials' restricts itself by aiming to show the strength and international character of the current research in synthetic chemistry that is being developed in Portugal or abroad by teams that cooperate with this country. Hence, it gathers representative contributions of main Portuguese research groups and foreign collaborating ones. Nevertheless, the topic should be understood in a wide sense, being open to types of studies with significance on sustainable synthesis and applications in chemistry, materials and/or related sciences.

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have played a dominant role in organometallic chemistry for decades and revolutionized the field of homogenous catalysis. NHCs have been thoroughly studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and have shown unique reactivity towards transition metals, chalcogens, azides and pnictogens. This thesis is aimed at utilizing the unique reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbenes to develop novel, robust catalysts to mediate organic transformations. The multi-faceted work within this thesis explores the use of NHCs as ancillary ligands on early and late transition metals as potential catalysts for olefin polymerization and ring-closing metathesis, respectively. This work also includes exploring the synthesis and coordination of ancillary ligands derived from the unique reactivity of NHCs towards azides, chalcogens and pnictinidenes. The reactivity of a novel aryl-substituted acyclic imino-N-heterocyclic carbene to early transition metals, cyclooctasulfur and Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes was explored. The reactivity of imidazol-2-imide towards Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes and the synthesis and coordination of a novel group of ligands bearing an imidazol-2-imine scaffold were also explored. Lastly, this work will include the reactivity of IMes=PPh to Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes.

This book meets the long-felt need for a reference on ferrocenes with the focus on catalysis. It provides a thorough overview of the synthesis and characterization of different types of chiral ferrocene ligands, their application to various catalytic asymmetric reactions, and versatile chiral materials as well as drug intermediates synthesized from them. Written by the "who's who" of ferrocene catalysis, this is a guide to the design of new ferrocene ligands and synthesis of chiral synthetic intermediates, and will thus be useful for organic, catalytic and synthetic chemists working in academia, industrial research or process development.

The purpose of this work was the synthesis of N,N'-diphosphanyl-functionalized NHC ligands andtheir coordination chemistry. The novel stable and rigid tridentate N,N'-diphosphanyl-imidazol-2-ylidene was synthesized and experimental and computational information on its stability weregained. It served as a unique platform for the synthesis of novel mono-, di-, tri-, penta-, hexanuclear complexes with the coinage metals (Cu, Ag and Au), exhibiting rare structural features. The mono- and dinuclear complexes with one or two dangling P-donors provided rational access to heterotrinuclear complexes. All these coinage metal complexes have short metal-metalseparations, indicating the presence of d10-d10 interactions, and display excellent luminescentproperties. Partial or complete transmetallation of the homotrinuclear Cu or Ag complexes withPd(0) precursors led to hetero-trinuclear complexes with d10-d10 interactions. In addition to itsbridging behavior, this ligand also showed its chelating behavior in Pd or Cr(III) complexes. Thelatter displayed superior performance in ethylene oligomerization than the Cr(II) complexes andgave mostly oligomers.

The design of a novel NHC chelating ligand allowed the beneficial “association” of a soft NHC moiety with hard oxophilic group 4 metal which lead to the synthetize of a broad family of NHC group 4 metal complexes. Remarkably, the (OCO)MXX' group 4 chelates (X, X' = amido, alkoxide, chloride) were all found to be stable and robust entities with the NHC moiety truly and solely acting as an ancillary ligand under catalytic conditions. Attempts to access alkyl group 4 derivatives opened the way to an unprecedented NHC--involving alkyl/benzyl rearrangement reaction, there by constituting the first instance in which a NHC moiety coordinated to a high--oxidation--state and oxophilic transition metal NHC complex exhibited such a behavior. The prepared NHC group 4 metal alkoxide species were investigated in polymerization catalysis and found to be suitable initiators for the controlled and highly stereoselective ring--opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters (lactide, a dimer of lactic acid) and cyclic carbonates (trimethylene carbonate), demonstrating the robustness of such species in catalytic conditions. These results constitute the first instance in which a NHC--based oxophilic metal catalyst is competitive and, to some extent, even performs better than current systems the area.
