This treatise discusses Ackley Improved cartridges. We will not teach you how to install and chamber a barrel here, we handle that information in, "Chambering Rifle Barrels for Accuracy". In this book we will in detail help you to understand the special details related to chambering for Ackley Improved designs.P.O. Ackley is the undisputed King of Improved cartridges and maybe of wildcats in general. He was active in gunsmithing from 1936 until his passing in 1989. Ackley was probably not the originator of fireformed "improved" cartridge designs, but he was definitely the guy who popularized it, and more importantly P.O. Ackley standardized the improved cartridge concept. What I mean by that is that he created a simple understandable headspace method for these designs. You will learn how to apply these simple principals.

Excerpt from Cartridge Manufacture: A Treatise Covering the Manufacture of Rifle Cartridge Cases, Bullets, Powders, Primers and Cartridge Clips, and the Designing and Making of the Tools Used in Connection With the Production of Cartridge Cases and Bullets, Together With a Description of Th The processes used in the manufacture of cartridges are of interest not only to the makers of munitions of war, but to every mechanic who is engaged in those industries in which the drawing and forming of metal in presses is of im portance. The principles and operations pertaining to the production of metal cartridges are essentially the same as those used in hundreds of industries engaged in the manu facture of drawn objects for the most peaceful purposes; and while at the present time the interest in ammunition is paramount, the methods used for its manufacture differ in no essential from the methods employed in the ordinary metal working industries. The aim of this book is, there fore, not only to cover the various steps in the manufacture of one of the most important of munitions of war, but also to place on record approved methods in the drawing and form ing of deep metal shells for any purpose. As the processes used in the manufacture of cartridges are probably more highly developed than those employed in most other fields of metal drawing, a book relating to these processes will no doubt be found of great value in many kindred fields. The process of user-centered innovation: how it can benefit both users and manufacturers and how its emergence will bring changes in business models and in public policy. Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users—both individuals and firms—often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products—most notably in the free and open-source software movement—but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive. Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses—the custom semiconductor industry is one example—that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R&D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. The goal of a democratized user-centered innovation system, says von Hippel, is well worth striving for. An electronic version of this book is available under a Creative Commons license.

In addition to discussing vintage designs, such as those developed by P.O. Ackley, Jerry Gebby, and Charles Newton, the book covers more recent work carried out by Estergaard, Gibbs, Z-Hat, and more." Herbert G. Ackley: America's gunsmith, author Fred Zeglin's years of extensive research highlight not just the history of cartridge and rifle development, but an insider's look at a humble man who influenced nearly everything we know about shooting and ballistics today. P.O. Ackley's ideas om reloading, rifle accuracy, barrel making, cartridge choice, and wildcats are just as relevant for modern "gun cranks" as they were in Ackley's heyday. Zeglin delivers the most complete collection of accurate dimensions, loading data and history for the lifetime of cartridges created by P.O. Ackley, the most influential gunsmith in America. Most shooters know him today because of his "Ackley Improved" cartridge designs. But those cartridges are only the tip of the iceberg. P.O. Ackley: America's gunsmith is the whole story.
