This report describes the formulation of a model of the dynamic behavior of the Benchmark Active Controls Technology (BACT) wind tunnel model for active control design and analysis applications. The model is formed by combining the equations of motion for the BACT wind tunnel model with actuator models and a model of wind tunnel turbulence. The primary focus of this report is the development of the equations of motion from first principles by using Lagrange's equations and the principle of virtual work. A numerical form of the model is generated by making use of parameters obtained from both experiment and analysis. Comparisons between experimental and analytical data obtained from the numerical model show excellent agreement and suggest that simple coefficient-based aerodynamics are sufficient to accurately characterize the aeroelastic response of the BACT wind tunnel model. Wind tunnel testing usually requires positioning of the aircraft model in the airstream. This paper presents the design philosophy for a typical generic automatic control system for use in the wind tunnel facilities at Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tullahoma, Tennessee, and is presently used to accurately control the position and/or velocity of an aircraft in one to six degrees of freedom while taking into account the effects of outside influences. Selection of feedback devices, controller design concepts, safeguard implementation, operator status and display capabilities, and mechanism movement simulation are topics that will be addressed.

The need for a high Reynolds number transonic wind tunnel (HIRT) has been recognized throughout the industry for some years. The proposed HIRT facility at Arnold Engineering Development Center will provide a much needed tool for the study of phenomena sensitive to Reynolds number. The usefulness of the HIRT facility will be largely influenced by the ability of industry to design and build wind-tunnel models for an acceptable cost capable of operating within the severe environment of the tunnel. The object of this study is to determine the feasibility of designing and building models capable of withstanding the loads and environmental conditions of the facility. An aeroelastically scaled wing wind tunnel model was designed and fabricated for low-speed wind tunnel tests of real-time optimization-based continuous camber and twist shaping concepts for the SSCI-DIRECT project. The model has twelve independently controlled trailing edge control surfaces that can be actively driven while testing is underway. Development of the model follows the successful development and wind tunnel tests of smaller VCCTEF configured aeroelastic models which were fitted with manually adjusted flaps. The new active model packages the flap actuators completely within the outer mold line of the wing. Detailed analytical models for the structural dynamic and aeroelastic behavior of the new model were validated by static loads and modal tests. Wind tunnel runs were carried out to measure lift and drag characteristics of the new model and to gain experience with its continuous communication with the data acquisition system of the wind tunnel and the control algorithms. The wind tunnel model is available for further testing.
