An aeroelastically scaled wing wind tunnel model was designed and fabricated for low-speed wind tunnel tests of real-time optimization-based continuous camber and twist shaping concepts for the SSCI-DIRECT project. The model has twelve independently controlled trailing edge control surfaces that can be actively driven while testing is underway. Development of the model follows the successful development and wind tunnel tests of smaller VCCTEF configured aeroelastic models which were fitted with manually adjusted flaps. The new active model packages the flap actuators completely within the outer mold line of the wing. Detailed analytical models for the structural dynamic and aeroelastic behavior of the new model were validated by static loads and modal tests. Wind tunnel runs were carried out to measure lift and drag characteristics of the new model and to gain experience with its continuous communication with the data acquisition system of the wind tunnel and the control algorithms. The wind tunnel model is available for further testing.

A program was conducted to obtain data, both steady state and dynamic, from wind tunnel models and full scale flight tests of the RA-5C aircraft. Data were acquired on 0.228 and 0. 125 scale RA-5C inlet models and on a fully instrumented flight test RA-5C aircraft. Interim data reports presenting the data acquired during each test have been published. These data were utilized in this report to develop scaling techniques for correlating small scale model wind tunnel data with full scale flight data. Data presented include duct steady state operating characteristics and pressure distributions in the inlet and at the engine face. Dynamic data are presented in the form of engine face turbulence contour plots, radial turbulence distributions and selected spectral data functions. Data are presented for variations of angle of attack, angle of yaw, Reynolds number, ramp angle, secondary flow rates and inlet diverter width. A reduction in flutter margin can occur for variable geometry aircraft when the wing of the aircraft is swept into the vicinity of the tail. Experiments on an aeroelastic wind tunnel model with active aerodynamic controls demonstrated that the flutter margins of these configurations can be increased through techniques other than the standard structural modifications. Improved margins were attained experimentally by employing rapidly responding aerodynamic controls activated by an optimal feedback. (Author).

The book includes the research papers presented in the final conference of the EU funded SARISTU (Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures) project, held at Moscow, Russia between 19-21 of May 2015. The SARISTU project, which was launched in September 2011, developed and tested a variety of individual applications as well as their combinations. With a strong focus on actual physical integration and subsequent material and structural testing, SARISTU has been responsible for important progress on the route to industrialization of structure integrated functionalities such as Conformal Morphing, Structural Health Monitoring and Nanocomposites. The gap- and edge-free deformation of aerodynamic surfaces known as conformal morphing has gained previously unrealized capabilities such as inherent de-icing, erosion protection and lightning strike protection, while at the same time the technological risk has been greatly reduced. Individual structural health monitoring techniques can now be applied at the part-manufacturing level rather than via extending an aircraft’s time in the final assembly line. And nanocomposites no longer lose their improved properties when trying to upscale from neat resin testing to full laminate testing at element level. As such, this book familiarizes the reader with the most significant develo pments, achievements and key technological steps which have been made possible through the four-year long cooperation of 64 leading entities from 16 different countries with the financial support of the European Commission.
