DELVE INTO THE REALM OF TWILIGHT is a novel set during the height of Louis XIV, dealing with the realm of magic and witchcraft that manifests in the insatiable desires of three witches as they abduct a mortal as their eternal lover. The mortal, Alexus, becomes immortal, living in the Realm of Twilight, a parallel dimension. Arian, Alexus' wife, sacrifices herself to save her husband. For Arian's interference, Arian is trapped herself in the Realm of Twilight and is forced to endure seeing Alexus throughout time be reincarnated and married to whomever he chooses never will she have that option as she has been entombed alive. Imprisoned for 300 years, Arian finally has the chance to escape, providing that she can contact Alexus in the modern day, for he has reincarnated as Sebastian Simons. And if she does contact him, he has a family. If her spell can be broken, will she age her 300 years? The witches are immortal as well and have the same possibility of capturing and killing her husband, rather than imprisonment. Is her love and sacrifice, ideals of the past, still pertinent after 300 years? Magic and fortune telling has mesmerized humanity for centuries. DELVE INTO THE REALM OF TWIGLIGHT is steeped with poetic spells tantalizing the reader with an array of topics depicting resurrection, cloaking, memory loss and, of course, love potions.

This collection of essays has been compiled in the hope of making scholars in the rest of the world more familiar with Japanese studies in English literature. By revealing to Western scholars the insights and criticisms of their Japanese colleagues they should help to expand the arena of intellectual discussion and improve its quality. The essays are the work of younger scholars from several leading Japanese universities. They range widely over English and American literature, stretching in time from Chaucer to T. S. Eliot, and in subject from the concept of "the royal" in Shakespeare to the involuntary memory as discovered by Coleridge. The writers have some uniquely Japanese perspectives, not of the hackneyed "East meets West" type, but insights stemming, the editor suggests, from these writers' experience of their own very rich literary tradition. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

The image of the shadow in mid-twentieth-century America appeared across a variety of genres and media including poetry, pulp fiction, photography, and film. Drawing on an extensive framework that ranges from Cold War cultural histories to theorizations of psychoanalysis and the Gothic, Erik Mortenson argues that shadow imagery in 1950s and 1960s American culture not only reflected the anxiety and ambiguity of the times but also offered an imaginative space for artists to challenge the binary rhetoric associated with the Cold War. After contextualizing the postwar use of shadow imagery in the wake of the atomic bomb, Ambiguous Borderlands looks at shadows in print works, detailing the reemergence of the pulp fiction crime fighter the Shadow in the late-1950s writings of Sylvia Plath, Amiri Baraka, and Jack Kerouac. Using Freudian and Jungian conceptions of the unconscious, Mortenson then discusses Kerouac’s and Allen Ginsberg’s shared dream of a “shrouded stranger” and how it shaped their Beat aesthetic. Turning to the visual, Mortenson examines the dehumanizing effect of shadow imagery in the Cold War photography of Robert Frank, William Klein, and Ralph Eugene Meatyard. Mortenson concludes with an investigation of the use of chiaroscuro in 1950s film noir and the popular television series The Twilight Zone, further detailing how the complexities of Cold War society were mirrored across these media in the ubiquitous imagery of light and dark. From comics to movies, Beats to bombs, Ambiguous Borderlands provides a novel understanding of the Cold War cultural context through its analysis of the image of the shadow in midcentury media. Its interdisciplinary approach, ambitious subject matter, and diverse theoretical framing make it essential reading for anyone interested in American literary and popular culture during the fifties and sixties.
