Cage culture has many advantages over conventional pond and raceway culture. It is highly flexible, and can be carried out in unmodified existing water bodies such as rivers, streams, reservoirs, lakes and swamps. Many species of fish have proved to be suited to his method of aquaculture. This paper examines the current status of freshwater cage culture in Southeast Asia, and describes the extent of existing extensive, semi-intensive, and discussed in the light of current and future freshwater cage culture is discussed in the light of current and future freshwater resources. Biological economic and management problems, which at present restrict the development and expansion of cage culture are outlined and some solutions to these problems are discussed.
