This book constitutes the First Automatization of Cranial Implant Design in Cranioplasty Challenge, AutoImplant 2020, which was held in conjunction with the 23rd International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2020, in Lima, Peru, in October 2020. The challenge took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 10 papers presented together with one invited paper and a dataset descriptor in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected form numerous submissions. This challenge aims to provide more affordable, faster, and more patient-friendly solutions to the design and manufacturing of medical implants, including cranial implants, which is needed in order to repair a defective skull from a brain tumor surgery or trauma. The presented solutions can serve as a good benchmark for future publications regarding 3D volumetric shape learning and cranial implant design.

This monograph presents a comprehensive review of the clinical experience in surgical repair of cranial defects which the author has gained during a period of over ten years. Particular problems of patients undergoing cranioplasty, such as neurological impairments, EEG changes, variations of intracranial pressure, and sinking skin flap syndrome are described and discussed. The author presents convincing evidence of the importance of cranioplasty in improving the quality of life of patients with large and disfiguring cranial defects. Unfortunately, cranioplasty still ameliorates only to a minimal extent the general condition in patients suffering of major cerebral lesions. I am convinced that this volume will serve the purpose it was designed for : that it will be a most helpful introduction into the problems related to reconstructive surgery. 86 short papers originating from the 13th International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure and Brain Monitoring held in July 2007 in San Francisco present experimental as well as clinical research data on invasive and non-invasive intracranial pressure and brain biochemistry monitoring. The papers have undergone a peer-reviewing and are organized in eight sections: brain injury: ICP management and cerebral physiology; hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics; advanced neuromonitoring; biomedical informatics; imaging; ICP: brain compliance, biophysics, and biomechanics; stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intracerebral hematoma; and experimental studies and models. The papers address the increasing use of decompressive craniectomy for the treatment of brain edema as well after brain injury and the rapidly expanding field of advanced neuromonitoring and neuroimaging.

The idea behind this book is to produce a fully comprehensive and highly illustrated “how to” technical reference manual, demonstrating surgical procedures in a step by step manner. This book also covers assessment and investigations, but focuses on the surgical and non surgical management of all aspect of maxillofacial trauma. It will include most, if not all, of the surgical approaches and techniques used, for all injuries. This volume includes emergency procedures and the various techniques in repair of fractures and soft tissue injuries, from the simple to the complex. Each step is illustrated photographically or with line diagrams, with explanatory text. This will enable surgical trainees and surgeons with limited trauma experience to understand how and why any particular procedure is undertaken.

Practitioners today see increasing numbers of brain injuries across the country and around the glozbe. The causes run the gamut of human endeavor, from frailty associated with aging, military activity, sports, and motor vehicle accidents of all kinds. With a growing awareness of the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the need for early intervention to ameliorate these effects and improve patient outcomes have come demand for practical information for clinicians on the "frontlines." Designed for the busy practitioner Traumatic Brain Injury: Rehabilitation Medicine Quick Reference is a handy reference providing quick answers when diagnosing and treating traumatic brain injuries at every level. One hundred alphabetically listed topics are presented in a consistent two-page format for easy access to key information at a glance. The book covers assessment, diagnostic testing, and the full spectrum of brain injury conditions, sequelae, and interventions commonly associated with TBI and expected functional outcomes. Specialized areas of TBI care are alos included for unique patient populations, such as sports or military injury, and conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder or neuroendocrine disorder, that may be seen by providers in other settings. Surgical skill and imaging technology in the field of neurosurgery have developed remarkably during the past decade. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with high contrast resolution and multiplanar capabilities, allows for accurate preoperative localization and postoperative assessment of syringomyelia. Recent advances in dynamic MRI techniques have made it possible to evaluate normal and abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow at the foramen magnum, within the syrinx, and in the spinal subarachnoid space, without invasion of the closed CSF system. These developments have yielded substantial information concerning various aspects of syringomyelia. However, many issues related to the pathophysiology and treatment of syringomyelia remain controversial. This book contains the scientific contributions presented at the international sym posium "Syringomyelia 2000:' held in Kobe, Japan, June 16-17,2000. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together experts in the fields of neurosurgery, neurol ogy, and neuropathology, in order to enhance the level and scope of their knowledge by making them more aware of work done in complementary fields. The contribu tions also report on clinical and basic studies pertinent to the topic of the sympo sium. This volume thus represents a comprehensive description of the state of the art regarding this disease in the hope that it may help to define comprehensively what is already known and to find new ways toward a better understanding of the patho physiology, diagnosis, and treatment of syringomyelia.
