Rattlesnakes and ornery horses, the dreaded Texas Itch, midnight rambles in graveyards, trips to Mexico, and hard riding on the last open range: George Philip recounts all these adventures and more with wit and humour. George Phillip arrived in South Dakota from Scotland in 1899. For the next four years, he rode as a cowboy for his uncle's L-7 cattle outfit during the heyday of the last open range. But the cowboy era was a brief one, and in 1903 Philip turned in his string of horses and hung up his saddle to enter law school in Michigan. In these candid letters, Philip provides fascinating insights into the development of the West and of South Dakota. His writing details the cowboy's day-to-day work, from branding and roping to navigating across the palins by stars and buttes, as the great open ranges slowly closed up.

From the Preface: To travel over the ground where these cattle once grazed in countless numbers and see the domestic kind now driven to the pastures by little children; to see the broad prairies, where formerly a ride of a thousand miles would not reveal a furrow or fence, now checkered over with posts and wires and plowed fields, and the landscape dotted here and there with stacks of wheat, ricks of hay, and farm-houses, makes the old cowboy long to again see the prairies covered with long-horned cattle, picturesque wild horses, and herds of innumerable buffaloes; to once more ride the bucking bronco in pursuit of the wild steer and the fighting maverick; to hear the coyote's howl and the stampede's roar; to inhale the aroma of wild flowers whilst breathing the life-giving air that blows across the free and untrammeled plains, where the sun rises and sets in a halo of glory, where you have that thrilling of the heart, that buoyancy of spirit, that drives away every care and makes you laugh at danger.

There are but few words of preface needed to a story that is not historical. The principal part of the tale is laid among the cow-boys of the Western States of America, a body of men unrivalled in point of hardihood and devotion to work, as well as in reckless courage and wild daring. Texas, which twenty-five years ago was the great ranching state, is no longer the home of the typical cow-boy, but he still exists and flourishes in New Mexico and the northern States and Territories. The picture I have given of their life can be relied upon, and its adventures and dangers are in no degree coloured, as I have taken them from the lips of a near relative of my own who was for some years working as a cow-boy in New Mexico. He was an actor in many of the scenes described, and so far from my having heightened or embellished them, I may say that I have given but a small proportion of the perilous adventures through which he went, for had I given them in full it would, I am sure, have seemed to you that the story was too improbable to be true. In treating of cow-boy life, indeed, it may well be said that truth is stranger than fiction.
