Since the global financial crisis, corporate investment has been weak in India. Sluggish corporate investment would not only moderate growth from the demand side but also constrain growth from the supply side over time. Against this background, this paper analyzes the reasons for the slowdown and discusses how India can boost corporate investment, using both macro and firm-level micro data. Analysis of macro data indicates that macroeconomic factors can largely explain corporate investment but that they do not appear to account fully for recent weak performance, suggesting a key role of the business environment in reviving corporate investment. Analysis of micro panel data suggests that improving the business environment by reducing costs of doing business, improving financial access, and developing infrastructure, could stimulate corporate investment.

ABOUT THE BOOK Since the early 1990s, the growth process in India has been marked by a remarkable performance of services sector. The experience of developed countries suggests that growth of services sector followed the growth of industrial sector. However, India?s experience in this regard is somewhat different. The sectoral shift in favour of services sector over the last two decades has taken place in the face of an almost stagnant share of industry and a reduced share of agriculture in GDP. In fact, it was the growth performance of the services sector during the 1990s which sustained the overall growth of the Indian economy, particularly in times of adverse agricultural shocks and industrial slowdown. While software exports are a well-known success story, India is now an important venue for many tasks in services such as financial accounting, call centres, processing insurance claims, and medical transcription. The future potential of growth in these areas appears to be considerable. This book explains recent policy measures by the Government of India to make India?s services sector internationally competitive. The book focuses on the following services: financial services, IT and IT-enabled services, retail trading services, healthcare services, insurance services, educational services, transport and communication services, and tourism. It also includes a chapter on taxation of services in India.

This paper examines the trends and patterns in the corporate investment at the aggregate, sectoral and sub-sector level for the period 2011-12 to 2016-18. Using the real Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) as the measure of investment, the study finds that there has been a significant decline in the investment by the household sector, which suggests that the informal sector is one of the major contributors to the decline in investment in the post-crisis period. Further, there has been significant decline in the growth of corporate investment in recent years which has contributed to a severe economic slowdown in India. Though, the share of the service sector in corporate investment has increased significantly in the recent years, it is the major contributor for the decline in investment in the recent years followed by construction and mining & quarrying. Lastly, the investment in tangible assets constitutes the bulk of the total corporate investment, and the investment in intangibles is insignificant. This indicates that the corporate investment in Research and Development (R&D) is limited in India.
