The integration of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States international financial system was arguably one of the most profound changes experienced by the world economy in the 1990s. This book examines these countries in reforming their financial systems in the first decade of transition. Through case studies as well as more thematic approaches contributors deal with crucial elements of building a market-based financial system, the transformation of the banking sector, and non-bank reform and regulation of financial markets. They emphasise the importance of institution-building to the process of financial sector transformation and highlight the lessons to be learned from transitional financial experiences.

Corporate governance has become an increasingly important issue in recent years, both as a result of corporate scandals and because more than 20 transition economies in the former Soviet Union, Eastern and Central Europe are in the process of converting their economies from a central planning model to a market model. The World Bank has published a series of reports on corporate governance as part of its project on the Reports on the Observance of Standards and Codes (ROSC). The corporate governance principles in each ROSC are benchmarked against the OECD's Principles of Corporate Governance. The present study uses the data from the ROSC studies on Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia and assigns points based on the extent of compliance with the OECD's Principles in the categories of shareholder rights, equitable treatment of shareholders, the role of stakeholders in corporate governance, disclosure and transparency and board responsibilities and compares the relative scores using a five-point Likert Scale.

Download Corporate Governance and Financial Reform in China's Transition Economy Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The world economy is facing unprecedented challenges brought by the still unfolding global financial crisis. At this critical juncture in history, China's economic performance and financial stability are closely watched across the world. The current global economic downturn and the rigidities it poses on the growth prospects of any individual economy are a testing ground for the effects of China's corporate governance reform and financial reform that have been taking place in recent years. It is now a proper time to assess whether these reforms have yielded meaningful results which can help China withstand and navigate through the most severe economic difficulties of our times. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review and critique of corporate governance reforms and related financial reforms in China during the country's transition to a market economy, involving its enterprise, banking and capital markets sectors. China's participation in economic globalization, symbolized by its accession to the World Trade Organization, is taken as a broad background to the country's domestic reform agenda. By exploring the dynamics of China's evolving corporate governance regime, this book presents an important country study of corporate governance reforms in developing and post-communist transition economies to show the possibility of alternative paths to the market.
