Excerpt from Volume Tables and Point-Sampling Factors for Ponderosa Pine in the Front Range of Colorado Diameter at breast height - Measured to the nearest inch, outside the bark, at feet above ground level, on the uphill side of the tree. Full-inch diameter classes with class midpoints at the -inch marks, are used In the tables. Total height - Measured, in whole feet to the near est foot, from ground level on the uphill side of the tree upward to the tip. Trees forked below utilization limits described below, stag-topped, or severely deformed were not included in the sample. The midpoints of total height classes in the tables are multiples of 10 feet. Scaling diameter of logs. - Average diameter inside bark to nearest inch, measured at the small end of logs or half-logs. Minimum top diameters for merchantable volumes. Minimum top diameter inside bark for computation of merchantable cubic-foot volume was 4 inches. For board-foot volume, a minimum top diameter inside bark of 6 inches was used to conform to local practice. Logs with a scaling diameter smaller than inches usually were not included in saw-log volume. A few logs with smaller scaling diameters were included to satisfy the 4-foot rule described below. Excerpt from Softwood Tree Volume Equations for Major California Species Although the size of our sample was more than adequate, the reader should be aware of some important data deficiencies. First, two - thirds of the sample was drawn from trees measured many years ago. While we recognized the danger of bias inherent in the use of old data, that risk seemed preferable to relying on a much smaller sample with a limited geographical distribution. Second, we were unable to find measured-tree data from the Coast Ranges or, more impor tant, for trees under inches in diameter breast high. In the case of California red fir, all our sample trees were over 14 inches. This lack of small-tree data posed a particular problem in developing cubic-foot equations, since volumes were needed for all trees inches and larger. We were forced to extrapolate, using comparisons of existing tables as a guide to reasonable ness. Finally, our sample data for lodgepole pine and incenscedar were limited-26 trees of the former species and 46 of the latter-and confined to the southern Sierra Nevada. In spite of these scanty data, we decided to develop volume equations for both species, as an alternative preferable to using equations developed for some other Species.
