Excerpt from Confessions of an English Doctor Allow me to give a few thumb-nail sketches of myself and a few friends. I went to Edinburgh to study medicine, after being coached specially for the preliminary examination. I did not feel in the least inclined to become a model student: I was to some extent interested in the subjects which I had to study, but I occupied myself with so many things in general that I could never approach anywhere near the exemplary. Indeed, I always looked upon an exemplary student as a most uninteresting narrow-minded, and one-sided specimen of humanity. I attended nearly all lectures, it is true, partly because I was interested, but also because I felt I ought to do so; but I was not inclined to spend much time over medical books. I liked to be left alone to study anything I chose; and what I liked best of all were "the affairs of men." In my early student days I found so many opportunities for learning everything, including just a little medicine and surgery, that life in Edinburgh was to me most entrancing. Almost every pursuit appeared to be within my reach in this wonderful city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For two years, Michael Foxton wrote about his experiences as a junior doctor in the NHS for the Guardian. Vivid, hilarious, and often alarming, his book has gone on to find a cult following among doctors and patients alike. His observations illuminate the quirks, horrors, and delights of all aspects of doctoring, from casualty to the psychiatric ward. Foxton tells us what it really feels like to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and introduces us to a mixed cast of patient that includes the rude, the violent, and the outrageously flirtatious. Bedside Stories has become a comic classic.

Their last name was King. We took her to the operating room and soon I came out and announced that he was the proud father of a baby boy--I told him his wife said that he should name the little one. Mr. King scratched his head and said, "Gee I just don't know, I've just about used up all the names I can think of." He glanced up at a sign that read, "No Smoking." "That's it," he says, "I'll name him Nosmo--Nosmo King."
