These volumes contain the proceedings of CMWR2002, which was hosted by the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences at Delft University of Technology. The interest in this meeting was truly overwhelming: around 230 papers from leading scientists were submitted and accepted for publication in the proceedings. The actual scope of the meeting was much broader than the title "Computational Methods in Water Resources" might suggest. Not only traditional hydrological topics like surface water and groundwater hydrology were covered, but also modern topics like coupled reactive transport, multiphase flow, pore-scale network modeling, remediation techniques, optimization, groundwater-surface water interactions and data assimilation. A quick glance through the Table of Contents of these two volumes immediately shows the richness of the material presented during the four days of the conference. New conceptual models, experimental methods, upscaling techniques and parameter estimation procedures were introduced. Nevertheless, the emphasis was still on the development of new accurate and robust computational techniques.

Fluids play an important role in environmental systems appearing as surface water in rivers, lakes, and coastal regions or in the subsurface as well as in the atmosphere. Mechanics of environmental fluids is concerned with fluid motion, associated mass and heat transport as well as deformation processes in subsurface systems. In this reference work the fundamental modelling approaches based on continuum mechanics for fluids in the environment are described, including porous media and turbulence. Numerical methods for solving the process governing equations as well as its object-oriented computer implementation are discussed and illustrated with examples. Finally, the application of computer models in civil and environmental engineering is demonstrated.

Free-Surface Flow: Computational Methods presents a detailed analysis of numerical schemes for shallow-water waves. It includes practical applications for the numerical simulation of flow and transport in rivers and estuaries, the dam-break problem and overland flow. Closure models for turbulence, such as Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes and Large Eddy Simulation are presented, coupling the aforementioned surface tracking techniques with environmental fluid dynamics. While many computer programs can solve the partial differential equations describing the dynamics of fluids, many are not capable of including free surfaces in their simulations. Provides numerical solutions of the turbulent Navier-Stokes equations in three space dimensions Includes closure models for turbulence, such as Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes, and Large Eddy Simulation Practical applications are presented for the numerical simulation of flow and transport in rivers and estuaries, the dam-break problem and overland flow
