The attainment of peak bone mass during the premenopausal years is critical in preventing osteoporosis later in life. The purpose of this study is to determine if peak bone mass can be improved after age 20, the age at which peak bone mass is usually reached, and to compare the effects of region-specific resistance exercise with aerobic exercise. Thus far, 82 subjects have been enrolled and randomized and begun on their exercise programs.

The attainment of peak bone mass during the premenopausal years is critical in preventing osteoporosis later in life. The purpose of this study was to determine if peak bone mass can be improved after age 20, the age near which peak bone mass is usually reached, and to compare the effects of region specific resistance exercise with aerobic exercise. Forty three volunteers completed six months of the protocol. Thirty individuals completed twelve months with fifteen in each group. Bone density was shown to significantly increase in the spine, femoral neck and radius by 12 months in both groups. The resistance exercise group had significantly higher densities at the femoral neck and mid-radius at 12 months.

The attainment of peak bone mass during the premenopausal years is critical in preventing osteoporosis later in life. The purpose of this study is to survey 1,000 active duty military premenopausal women in regards to skeletal health habits such as current levels of calcium intake, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, menstrual regularity, and parity. We further wish to measure bone density in a subset of 100 women to determine which factors correlate best with optimal peak bone mass.

The aim of the first phase of this study was to get all participants enrolled into either the control or experimental exercise group. Three research assistants (exercise leaders) were selected and trained in the Motherwell exercise program. The training was given to all three assistants simultaneously. Participants were recruited at the three study sites at the time of OB registration. Participants were accepted if they were 16 weeks or less gestation. I hope the significance of the study will demonstrate the importance of continued regular physical training before, during, and after pregnancy.

The final phase of study was to collate the data from the three sites to compare and analyze each of the six variables. The total number of participants enrolled reached 106 of the 150 anticipated. Many of the participants from the control group never turned in data and several Motherwell program participants stopped attending class after one or two months. After plotting the data available 15 participants in each group had sufficient information to be included in the analysis. Results showed the length of labor for the Motherwell group was 5.78 hours verses 9.2 hours for the control group. On an average the control groups babies weighed more than the Motherwell groups. The diagnostic physical training test taken six weeks postpartum showed the average score for the control group to be 158 points and the Motherwell group scored an average of 155 points. The variance was not very large. Overall the results do support that exercise is beneficial during pregnancy.

ONE OF THE ATLANTIC’S GREAT AMERICAN NOVELS OF THE PAST 100 YEARS The debut novel from critically acclaimed and New York Times–bestselling author of On Such a Full Sea and My Year Abroad. In Native Speaker, author Chang-rae Lee introduces readers to Henry Park. Park has spent his entire life trying to become a true American—a native speaker. But even as the essence of his adopted country continues to elude him, his Korean heritage seems to drift further and further away. Park's harsh Korean upbringing has taught him to hide his emotions, to remember everything he learns, and most of all to feel an overwhelming sense of alienation. In other words, it has shaped him as a natural spy. But the very attributes that help him to excel in his profession put a strain on his marriage to his American wife and stand in the way of his coming to terms with his young son's death. When he is assigned to spy on a rising Korean-American politician, his very identity is tested, and he must figure out who he is amid not only the conflicts within himself but also within the ethnic and political tensions of the New York City streets. Native Speaker is a story of cultural alienation. It is about fathers and sons, about the desire to connect with the world rather than stand apart from it, about loyalty and betrayal, about the alien in all of us and who we finally are.
