Download Speech Perception, Production and Acquisition Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This book addresses important issues of speech processing and language learning in Chinese. It highlights perception and production of speech in healthy and clinical populations and in children and adults. This book provides diverse perspectives and reviews of cutting-edge research in past decades on how Chinese speech is processed and learned. Along with each chapter, future research directions have been discussed. With these unique features and the broad coverage of topics, this book appeals to not only scholars and students who study speech perception in preverbal infants and in children and adults learning Chinese, but also to teachers with interests in pedagogical applications in teaching Chinese as Second Language.

Download Cognitive Processing of Chinese and Related Asian Languages Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The aim of this volume is to integrate the most recent research in the cognitive processing of Chinese and related Asian languages (i.e. Japanese and Korean) into a single academic reference. Because so much more was learned about the topic over the past several years, the proposed volume is intended to provide something like a state-of-art review and to capture what is currently going on in a new and rapidly expanding field.

Download Processing the Chinese Language Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The past decade witnesses not only dramatic economic changes but also exponential developments in science in China. Given its unique structural properties, the Chinese language provides challenging opportunities to explore both the language-specific neuro-cognitive processes during communication and the universality of theories developed on the basis of Indo-European languages. This special issue reports recent studies on cognitive/neural processes of the Chinese language, using either the behavioural and/or neuroscientific methods. Topics investigated range from lexical processing of Chinese characters and compound words, to the processing of syntactic structures, and to the perception of consonants and the production of spoken words.

Download Cognitive Linguistics and the Study of Chinese Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Bringing together contributions from a group of prominent researchers, within a cognitive-linguistic framework, this volume sheds light on linguistic structures and usages characteristic of the Chinese language, including noun-verb inclusion, the conceptual spatialization of actions, existential constructions, conceptual structures and coherence, idioms and metaphors, language acquisition of caused motion, etc. The contributions are committed to the principle of “converging evidence” that has been advocated in Cognitive Linguistics since its inception. Some studies in this volume combine introspective methods with theoretical analysis, while others rely on corpus-based, experimental and neuroscientific methods. Featuring diverse topics and multiple methods, this collection will be useful to readers who are interested in the grammatical and conceptual structure of Chinese, as well as in the state-of-the-art of Cognitive Linguistics in China.

Download Cognitive Processing of the Chinese and the Japanese Languages Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The area of cognitive processing of Chinese and Japanese is currently attracting a great deal of attention by leading cognitive psychologists. They aim to find out the similarities and differences in processing the morphosyllabic Chinese and Japanese syllabary as compared with alphabetic language systems. Topics under the processing of Chinese include: the use of phonological codes in visual identification of Chinese words, the constraint on such phonological activation, recognition of Chinese homophones, Chinese sentence comprehension and children's errors in writing Chinese characters. Topics under the processing of Japanese include: the automatic recognition of kanji within an interactive-activation framework, On-reading and Kun-reading of kanji characters, processing differences between hiragana and kanji, the effect of polysemy on katakana script, and the writing behavior of Japanese and non-Japanese speakers. The interactive-activation model provides the phonologic-orthographic links in processing both language systems. The present volume should add greatly to our understanding of this topic. Many of the contributors are internationally known for their experimental psychological work.

Download Psycholinguistic Implications for Linguistic Relativity Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Rather than offering variations in "world view" as evidence for linguistic relativity, this book views language related differences in terms of the facility with which information is processed. Distinctive perceptual, memory, and neurolinguistic aspects of the Chinese language are discussed, as is the cognitive style of the Chinese people. Chinese orthography and other features of morphology and syntax are examined in relation to both bottom-up and top-down cognitive processes. While providing an extensive review of the experimental literature published in English on the Chinese language, this volume also offers a significant sample of the literature originally published in Chinese.
