"I personally led the Coast Guard boat rescue operation in the wake of hurricane Katrina . . . the largest and most successful rescue operation in American history. This book is the story of the Coast Guard rescue operation in the flooded city of New Orleans and the surrounding area after Hurricane Katrina, but it's much more than that." --Capt. Robert G. Mueller, U.S. Coast Guard (ret.) With disaster scenarios of increasing interest and disaster preparedness paramount importance, it's time to take a deeper look at what went very right before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina. Unlike the woefully unprepared civilian population, the Coast Guard was staged and ready. The unprecedented surface rescue put into action under Capt. Mueller and RADM Castillo took place with little fanfare, and saved the lives of 25,000 people by boat and 8,500 by helicopter. Capt. Robert G. Mueller, U.S. Coast Guard (ret.) led the surface rescue operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He retired after 30 years in the service and is the vice president for compliance at Turn Services, a towboat and fleeting company. He is also an adjunct professor at Tulane University teaching Homeland Security in the graduate program. RADM Joseph Pepe Castillo, U.S. Coast Guard (ret.) was the 8th District Chief of Operations commanding the Coast Guard Group New Orleans. He was instrumental in leading the rescue and evacuation. He earned a B.S. in management from the Coast Guard Academy and both an M.S. in industrial relations and a professional certificate in human resources management from the University of New Haven in Connecticut.

To understand the impact of a disaster, you must understand its causes. How did Hurricane Katrina turn into a monster storm? How did poor planning contribute to the scope of the disaster? Investigate the disaster from a cause-and-effect perspective and find out!

We were baptized in Jesus name, not anyone elses. Let us all resolve to be simply Christians, disciples of Jesus Christ. If unity among believers was so important to Jesus, how can we not make the effort to maintain the unity He made possible by His death on the cross? Miracle at the Garage tells a present-day tale of hope, wonder, amazement, grace, love, and faith. God is here with us today, in our struggles, in our pain, in our love, and in our fame. This memoir offers a look into the lives of a few individuals with two common bondstheir love for Christ and their connection through the Garage, a mens ministry. It describes the miracles that have transformed them into the loving, strong, God-fearing, and courageous men they have become through Gods love. Each figure in Miracle at the Garage has his own unique story, including author Andrew Elliott, who overcame alcoholism through the power of Gods love; Anthony, the spiritual leader of the group who overcame a life of drugs to come back to God; and John, who is in a car accident with Anthonys wife and miraculously walks into the Garagewhere he finds forgiveness. All of the people who share their personal stories here are part of the Garage ministry that serves as the backdrop for this inspirational collection. Incredibly, some of the miracles actually occurred at the Garage itself. The personal reflections shared here can renew your faith in the miracle of Gods love and remind you that there is also hope, grace, and wonder in that faith.

I would like to share some of my experience while serving in New Orleans, Louisiana. This deployment was my first major deployment in which just about every Army National Guard and Air Guard in the union was involved. This joint task force also includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, and Reserve Forces. The U.S. Coast Guard was deeply involved the relief efforts as well. I was impressed to see the Army 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Calvary Division playing a major role along with National Guard units. This as if all America came to the aide of its own. I even witness law enforcement from all over the country convoying to the Gulf State to lend a helping hand. I would like to thank the church and the people of Mississippi for their warm and loving hospitality as we travel towards New Orleans. This experience is an experience I will never forget. I was told by Iraqi Freedom veterans that New Orleans look and smells like Baghdad Iraq. I had never experience war upfront or combat but I was always in training for war and supported the war efforts. I see this relief effort as preparation for what is to come in my life. I was told this is just the beginning. The Guard, Reserve and Active components will play a more active role in our homeland relief efforts. I am forever changed I thought Hurricane Frances and Ivan was something. Hurricane Katrina affected everyone nationwide. I'm glad to play major part in the relief effort and be a blessing not just to the people of New Orleans and Louisiana but also to the people of Alabama and Mississippi.
