One of the most puzzling and striking features of many of the genetically determined progressive neuromuscular diseases such as the spinal muscular atrophies and the muscular dystrophies is that muscular wasting and weak ness in these cases is curiously selective, at least in the early stages, pick ing out certain skeletal muscles and sparing others. The diagnosis of these conditions has largely depended in the past upon the recognition of specific patterns of involvement of individual muscles and muscle groups, taken along with information derived from the mode of inheritance within the in dividual family and the results of special investigations. The investigations of most value have proved to be serum enzyme studies, electromyography and related techniques, and muscle biopsy. The advent of CT scanning has, however, introduced a new dimension; as the authors of this interesting monograph have clearly demonstrated, it is now possible, using the whole body scanner, to define patterns of muscular atrophy in the limbs and trunk much more precisely than by any other method. Not only does this techni que demonstrate which muscles are involved, but the changes in relative density provide useful information about the severity of the process and about the progress of the disease if the studies are performed serially. This monograph is pleasantly written and most attractively illustrated.

This open access book focuses on imaging of the musculoskeletal diseases. Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances in this area, driven by clinical as well as technological developments. The authors are all internationally renowned experts in their field. They are also excellent teachers, and provide didactically outstanding chapters. The book is disease-oriented and covers all relevant imaging modalities, with particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. Important aspects of pediatric imaging are also included. IDKD books are completely re-written every four years. As a result, they offer a comprehensive review of the state of the art in imaging. The book is clearly structured with learning objectives, abstracts, subheadings, tables and take-home points, supported by design elements to help readers easily navigate through the text. As an IDKD book, it is particularly valuable for general radiologists, radiology residents, and interventional radiologists who want to update their diagnostic knowledge, and for clinicians interested in imaging as it relates to their specialty.

Neuromuscular imaging has increasingly become an important tool in the detection and diagnosis of inherited and acquired neuromuscular disease. This book is a groundbreaking radiological and neurological overview of current methods and applications of imaging—including aspects of neuroimaging and musculoskeletal imaging—in patients with inherited, metabolic, and inflammatory muscle diseases. Imaging features are discussed in the context of clincial presentation, histopathology, therapeutic options and differential diagnosis. World leading expert contributors give a comprehensive and didactic review of neuromuscular disorders and available imaging modalities, each illustrated with numerous figures. Topics discussed include: -Modalities such as ultrasound, CT and MRI -Muscle anatomy and physiology -Clinical applications in hereditary and acquired myopathies -Clinical applications in motor neuron disorders and peripheral nerve imaging

This comprehensive, meticulously illustrated volume effectively demonstrates the role of CT, MRI, MRS, ultrasonography, conventional radiography and nuclear medicine in evaluating the integrity and quality of skeletal muscle. Besides reviewing all imaging modalities, the book presents the complete spectrum of muscle physiology and pathophysiology - both normal and diseased. Highly-detailed illustrations highlight the in-depth survey of clinically significant muscle abnormalities. Radiologists will especially value the unique reference atlas of MR images of normal skeletal muscle. By incorporating exercise and MRI, advantage is made of the natural contrast between active and inactive muscle to remarkably enhance the definition of individual muscle anatomy. Certain to become an essential reference.

This Open Access book presents practical approaches to managing patients affected by various rheumatological diseases, allowing readers to gain a better understanding of the various clinical expressions and problems experienced by these patients. Discussing rheumatology from an organ systems perspective, it highlights the importance ofdetailed musculoskeletal examinations when treating patients affected by rheumatological diseases. The book first explores the latest diagnostic approaches and offers key tips for accurate musculoskeletal examinations before addressing the various treatment modalities, with a particular focus on the most common joints involved in rheumatoid arthritis: the wrists and the metacarpophalangeal joints (2nd and 3rd). Featuring easy-to-understand flow diagrams and explaining the common medical problems associated with rheumatic disease, such as shortness of breath and anemia, it is not only a valuable resource to rheumatologists, but will also appeal to medical students, junior residents, and primary healthcare physicians.

Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis provides extensive information regarding Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis (PM/DM), which is described as a heterogeneous disease complex. This book is divided into four sections: Part I (Clinical Features) covers the classification of PM/DM, details of the clinical presentation, and the disease's association with the other connective tissue disorders and malignancies. Part II (Etiology and Mechanisms) covers advances in the immunopathology and viral etiology of PM/DM along with a frequently recognized entity: inclusion body myositis. Part III (Diagnosis and Treatment) covers the histologic, muscle enzyme histochemical, electron microscopic, and resin histology features of PM/DM along with those electromyographic features that could help make a more accurate diagnosis. Part IV (Overview) summarizes the issues that may not have been clear and highlights differing and unsettled views or present available data. This text is directed to clinicians in private practice or in academic institutions concerned with PM/DM patients, including neurologists, rheumatologists, pediatricians, dermatologists, physiatrists, and neuromuscular investigators. This book is intended as well for neuromuscular pathologists who interpret muscle biopsy specimens and electromyographers who perform EMG studies to help determine the clinical diagnosis. Researchers in immunology and immunopathology of neuromuscular diseases will find discussions in this book invaluable.
