Excerpt from Climatological Data, Vol. 59: Georgia; January 1955 This was the coldest January since 1948, with temperatures averaging below normal. The unusual feature was the abnormally warm first week and the persistence of subnormal temperatures after the loth without any general relief through the end of the month. Below freezing nighttime temperatures were frequent even in the Southern Division. Temperature extremes were 80° at Quitman on the 4th and at Thomasville on the 5th; and 9° at Blairsville Experiment Station on the 31st. The precipitation was slightly above normal with the average of inches fairly evenly distributed among the three divisions of the state. Excerpt from Climatological Data, Florida, Vol. 59: January 1955 On the 18th, about p.m., a tornado occurred at Woodsmere which is located about 4 miles northwest of Orlando. The storm path was estimated to be 50 yards wide and it moved northward 50 yards and then northeast ward another 100 yards before dissipating. There were no casualties and the damage con sisted of the destruction of about 25 grape fruit trees and several pines for which no valuation was reported. Excerpt from Climatological Data, West Virginia, Vol. 59: January, 1951 Temperatures and precipitation averaged slightly above normal while snowfall averaged slightly below normal. Total snowfalls of over 10 inches were confined to the mountain areas. Heavy showers on the 14 - l5th caused local flash floods in the smaller streams. These showers were responsible also for several minor landslides on highways in Ohio Valley counties and also for the flooding of basements in parts of Parkersburg when the sewers backed up. Several thousand dollars property damage was caused by icy streets and roads from the 29th to the end of the month. One death, and about property damage, mostly to automobiles and trucks, were caused by glaze in Parkersburg alone according to reports. Excerpt from Climatological Data, Vol. 59: Arizona, January 1955 The average temperature for the State was below normal. Average monthly temperatures ranged from the high of at the Yuma Weather Bureau to the low of at Fort Valley. From the standpoint of daily average temperatures, most stations except in the extreme southwest were warmer than usual the first day or two of the month, and again briefly around mid-month. All areas showed some warming trends around the end of the month. With few exceptions, month ly maximum temperatures were reported during the last few days, the highest being 82 on the 30th at Tumacacori National Monument. Most of the month was abnormally cold. Sta tions reported monthly minimums on, a number of different dates, but most were in the per iod 18th 23d. The lowest temperature for the month was - 23 recorded at Maverick on the 22d.
