Excerpt from Climatological Data, Florida, Vol. 53: January 1949 The cold weather of the lst 2nd caused no damage to citrus. Beans, tomatoes, peppers and squash in Indian River, Lower East Coast and Everglades Districts suffered locally heavy losses, some fields being a total loss while in others the damage was slight. The cold was beneficial to hardier crops such as cabbage, celery, lettuce, etc. Overall losses were small due to low production at the between - season period. Open weather through the month permitted extensive land preparation and seeding for spring truck. Absence of precipitation was causing citrus leaves to curr and some fruit to drop in non-irrigated high land groves by the end of the month and irrigation was being practised generally by growers so equipped.
