Excerpt from Citizenship of the United States In the more restricted meaning of the term, a citizen is a per son who has the right to vote for public officers and on public measures, and who is qualified to hold offices in the gift of the: people. But this definition is too narrow, for minors - who are not permitted to vote - and women - who are allowed to exercise the franchise in only a few of the states - are citizens. In the broad sense of the word, citizens are the people, the members of the state or nation, including men, women, and children. In the United States thev are the sovereign power. Excerpt from American Citizenship IN view of the large number of textbooks on civics already available, some very decided reasons should be forthcoming from those who venture to add another one to the long list. Our first plea in justification of this volume is our belief that the books on government now offered to the schools have cer tain fundamental defects. Excerpt from Citizenship Citizenship is of all earthly things to-day the thing most worth while. Perhaps it has always been so. It is only, however, in our times that this statement could have been made without fear of contradiction. Because it is only now that men and women, for the first time in the history of the world, are, in any great number, beginning to consciously realise the social interdependence of all human beings and, with it, the urgency of placing this realisation upon an ordered basis. Such basis, in the considered opinion of vast and increasing numbers of people in all countries, alone makes possible human advance - scientific, artistic, social - in these days of new horizons and world-concepts. Excerpt from The Catholic Citizen I swear to support the Constitution of the United States. I pledge myself, as a citizen and Knight of Columbus, to enlighten myself fully on my duties as a citizen and to conscientiously perform such duties entirely in the interest of my country and regardless of personal consequences. I pledge myself to do all in my power to preserve the integrity and purity of the ballot and to promote reverence and respect for law and order. I promise to practice my religion openly and consistently, but without ostentation and to so conduct myself in public affairs as to reflect nothing but credit upon our holy Church to the end that she may flourish and our country prosper to the greater honor and glory of God. Oath of the Knights of Columbus. The Parish School Department views with laudable pride the effective assistance of the Catholic elementary school system in every activity designed to plant in the lives of school children, a deeper and holier appreciation of the privileges and dignity of American citizenship. Conscious, too, of the effects of a sound moral training under religious sanction, it rejoices in the unfailing contributions which Catholic education is continually making to preserve our national ideals in the minds and hearts of our future citizens. Resolution of the Parish School Department of the Catholic Educational Association, June 26, 1919. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Citizenship, Sovereignty The first volume of the work or compilation, of which this publication is a compend, to be entitled Our F deral Union: State Rights And Wrongs, will be published about 15th March. The volumes will contain 500 to 550 pages each, similar to this in type and arrangement. One is to be published each six or eight weeks, and sold in muslin binding at $3. Five volumes will probably suffice for the compilation, which is designed to furnish an epitome of governmental principles, historical facts, documents (each of which will be given entire), the substance of important debates, and of influential opinions in private and published letters, tracts, and other publications, and also a short examination of other Governments, to discover the right of our Revolution, and the superior excellences, and confused but not complicated systems, of our State and Federal Governments. Every family in the land needs this information, which is now scattered through hundreds of volumes, many expensive and inaccessible, in order to enable each Citizen, and the young lad who is soon to be a Citizen, to understand his individual rights, exalted privileges, responsible duties; and also the rights and wrongs of these Sovereign States. The wonder is not that we are in civil war, but that, with our ignorance of principles, and mistakes in theory, our practice has been so nearly correct. To the statesman and politician, the compilation, if at all a success, will be particularly valuable; bringing together for the first time documents, opinions, and principles, to which everyone needs to refer more or less often. The marginal notes, with the thorough index which shall be supplied, will make reference quite convenient; and until superseded by something better, it will be the American statesman's manual. In such a work some would like room to record notes and comments; and should the demand justify, an edition will be printed on superior paper, with wide margin for writing, and in strong binding. Subscribers will please intimate their wish, and should an extra edition be printed, the volumes of this edition will be received in exchange, if uninjured, the party paying the difference in price. The terms are already low, considering the present high cost of materials and the amount of reading supplied, but it is proposed to still further reduce them. The kind patrons in New York and those in Chicago, who have thus far advanced the funds for publication, will not permit delay for the lack of means. But not to encroach unnecessarily on their liberality, it is proposed to supply the five volumes for $13 paid in advance. Remittances can be made to the subscriber, either at Chicago, or directed to Station D, New York City, where most of his time must necessarily be spent until the publication is finished. Excerpt from What to Do for Uncle Sam: A First Book of Citizenship The United States Bureau of Education lays emphasis upon the part of the schools in training for citizenship. It urges a new teaching of the subject, beginning with the home, going on to the school, and from there into community relations. The Government asks, also, that work in civics be begun in the elementary schools. The work should embody less of the details of governmental agencies, but focus instead upon the child's own community obligations and activities. Following this thought, and taking up the pro gram of community civics outlined by the Bureau of Education, I have written What to Do for Uncle Sam, a first book in patriotism and citizen ship. At the end of each chapter I have placed questions and suggestions which establish a contact between the classroom and community life. Excerpt from The Teaching of Citizenship A Book must be judged by its purpose and by the way in which it meets that purpose. The first test may be stated quite distinctly by the author; the second test must be applied by the reader. In order that this volume may not be judged by ends which it does not seek to reach, it may be well to state the intent. The purpose is to suggest certain natural and human starting points for the teaching of patriotism and citizenship. It is not claimed that the book is an exhaustive treatise, even of its simple kind. It suggests directions rather than goals. It does not offer a storehouse of information, nor does it seek to fill minds with lists and classifications. It rather aims to guide an instinct and promote a sentiment. From this it is plain that the material cannot be merely historical. Perhaps no study has been more closely related to citizenship than has history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
