This study explored psychological, sociological, and anthropological aspects of choral ensembles as defined by literature relating to the interaction and development of organizations, and by the analysis and assessment of conductors' perceptions of "community" within choral ensembles. Survey responses of choral conductors (N=295) from the Southwest division of the American Choral Directors Association representing a variety of conducting focuses including elementary, secondary, collegiate, community, professional, and church choirs served as data for subsequent analysis. Empirical data were evaluated, using both descriptive and chi-square analyses, to examine the nature of conductors' agreement and/or disagreement with statements regarding aspects of choral community and typical use of specified approaches. Aspects considered by survey statements were: trust, commitment/accountability, communication, and relationships. Trust statements emphasized singing alone, sense of belonging, and singer autonomy. Commitment/accountability statements emphasized attendance, group/part checks, and goal setting. Communication statements emphasized written, verbal, and gestural communication, performing music from memory, and feedback. Relationship statements emphasized the relationship between the members, the conductor, the music and the audience. A collapsed, bi-model analysis revealed conductors were in agreement with these statements, with the exception of the approaches to sending e-mails, singing alone in front of others, and singing music memorized. Chi-square analysis also discovered years conducting experience functioned as a significant influence in respondents' views on aspects of choral community. Conductors' open-ended responses (characterized by their experience, thoughts and opinions) were examined and categorized according to the four aspects of choral community. Aspects of trust included security, acceptance, vulnerability, the celebration of successes, a safe environment, and bonding experiences. Aspects of commitment and accountability included responsibility, respect, intrinsic rewards, and a quest for the creation of beautiful/high quality music. Aspects of communication included honesty, constant verbal and written interaction, and equal interaction between the sender and receiver. Finally, aspects of relationship included shared experiences, high artistic standards, and integrity between the members.
