Excerpt from Catalog of the Magnificent Collection of the Gold, Silver and Copper Coins of the United States: Formed by the Late David S. Wilson, Esq., Pittsburgh The Gold Dollar series is the most complete in specimens from all Mints ever placed on sale, and includes a Dahlonega 1861, of which only four are known. It is needless to recapitulate the great number of rarities here, which will be found in due order in the catalog. I would particularly call the attention of the collectors to the Splendid series of gold proof sets, which, as sets, are exceedingly rare, and should be, and I believe will be, more highly appreciated in the future. The grandest coin that our country strikes to-day is the twenty-dollar piece, and that is at least as important as any other denomination, and no great collection can claim to fully represent the coins of the United States without contain ing all the denominations. The consideration of face value may be disregarded when we recollect that a collection of cents in the finest condition will easily average fifty dollars a piece. Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of United States Silver Coins, the Property of William H. Cottier, Esq. Of Buffalo, N. Y: Comprising Nearly the Entire Series of American Silver Coinage, Inclusive a Large Number of Rare Pattern Pieces, Experimental Coins, Etc., To Which Is Added a Selection of Rare American and Foreign Coins and Medals, in Gold, Silver, and Copper Concerning the quality of the coins offered, I have but little to say; the following pages will Speak for themselves. Many of the fine earlier dates have never before been offered at auction here, being importations from abroad - these will, no doubt, find appreciative buyers: others will be recognized as having formed part of well-known American cabinets. In the statement of the condition of the coins, while mindful of whatever good points offered themselves to my observation, I have endeavored to describe them just as they are; but Mr. Cottier exercised such excellent judgment in his selections that this task was rendered comparatively easy, especially in the case of the proofs of later years and of the pattern pieces, which are, with barely an exception, all that the most fastidious collector could wish. The selection of Foreign gold, and of American and Foreign silver coins and medals, which follows the Cottier collection proper, and also the first seventy numbers, comprise the cream of an im portant invoice lately received by me from Paris. An examination of the pages of this part of the sale will show that quite a number of the rarities have never before been offered in the United States, while several are totally unknown. With the hope to obtain a recognition of the merits of this catalogue by your representation at the sale.
