Excerpt from Catalogue of the Chicago Municipal Library, 1908 This Catalogue of the books, pamphlets, periodicals, etc., which consti tute the Municipal Library, as maintained in connection with the Bureau of Statistics, is the first ever compiled. Heretofore, as there was no Catalogue, the large mass of valuable material which has grown out of, or directly concerns, the Executive and Legislative branches of city governments, has practically scarcely existed for the Heads of Departments and the Aldermen of the corporation of Chicago. Few only of those officials have made it convenient often to visit this Library, and consequently its many possible benefits have been much too little availed of. A copy of this Catalogue is sent to His Honor the Mayor; to the Secre tary to the Mayor; to all the Heads of Departments and to their chief clerks and deputies; to every Alderman, and additional copies to the Chairmen of Committees of the City Council; and to all members, together with the chief clerks, of the permanent Commissions and Boards. Excerpt from The Chicago City Manual: 1913 "I cannot see any rational or logical ground for the mighty difference in the value which mankind generally set upon the past and future, as if the one was everything, and the other nothing, of no consequence whatever. On the other hand, I conceive that the past is as real and substantial a part of our being, that it is as much a bona fide, undeniable consideration in the estimate of human life, as the future can possibly be. To say that the past is of no importance, unworthy of a moment's regard, because it has gone by, and is no longer anything, is an argument that cannot be held to any purpose: for if the past has ceased to be, and is therefore to be accounted as nothing in the scale of good or evil, the future is yet to come, and has never been anything. Should any one choose to assert that the present only is of any value in a strict and positive sense, because that alone has a real existence, that we should seize the instant good, and give all else to the winds, I can understand what he means; but I cannot comprehend how this distinction between that which has a downright and sensible, and that which has a downright and sensible, and that which has only a remote and airy existence, can be applied to establish the preference of the future over the past; for both are in this point of view equally ideal, absolutely nothing, except as they are conceived of by the mind's eye, and are thus rendered present to the thoughts and feelings. Nay, the one is even more imaginary, a more fantastic creature of the brain than the other, and the interest we take in it more shadowry and gratuitous; for the future, on which we lay so much stress, may never come to pass at all, that is, may never be embodied into actual existence once, has received the stamp of truth, and left an image of itself behind. It is not, however, attempted to be denied that though the future is nothing at present, and has no immediate interest while we are speaking, yet it is of the utmost consequence in itself, and of the utmost interest to the individual, because it will have a real existence, and we have an idea of it as existing in time to come. Well, then, the past also has no real existence; the actual sensation and the interest belonging to it are both fled; but it has had a real existence, and we can still call up a vivid recollection of it as having once been." Excerpt from A List of Serials in Public Libraries of Chicago and Evanston: Corrected to January, 1901 At its meeting on November 5th, 1896, the Chicago Library Club voted to undertake the compilation of a union list of periodicals in the public libraries of Chicago and Evanston, and subsequently a committee was appointed to edit the work, in consultation with the Executive Committee of the Club. Eighteen libraries, which were thought to possess periodical material useful to scholars, and to be willing to make the same available for their use, were asked to furnish lists of their holdings, and all but three agreed to do so. The Committee greatly regret that the Chicago Historical Society could not, and that the Chicago Law Institute apparently did not care to, join in the work, as they recognize that the value of the compilation is appreciably lessened by the absence of the many historical and legal serials possessed by these two libraries. The determination of the mom of the undertaking, the decision of the many questions of form and other details, and the obtaining of the first lists from the libraries, required much more time than had been anticipated, so that it was not until the spring of 1898 that the work of consolidation and revision could be begun. In the first work of consolidation the Committee had the assistance of some forty members and friends of the Club, whose names are recorded on a later page, and to whom the Club is indebted for much earnest and faithful work. In this connection it should be said that nearly all the work done by the Committee and its assistants has been done by busy people outside of their regular working hours. Excerpt from Libraries of the City of Chicago: With an Historical Sketch of the Chicago Library Club This little volume is in nowise an attempt to give a complete statement regarding libraries or library efforts in Chicago. It is the result of the desire, long standing, of the members of the Chicago Library Club to gather in one place such data concerning the club, its history, its scope, and object as shall present a fairly adequate reason for its existence. There are many more libraries in Chicago than are enrolled here, but it has seemed inexpedient to wait longer for responses to the several requests sent to them for data. Moreover, as the Illinois Library Association is about to publish a fairly complete statement concerning the libraries of the state, including Chicago, the omission of some names from this will not be so serious. The five libraries of which extended notice is herein given have helped to make possible the publication of this hand-book, and to them acknowledgment is here given.
