Excerpt from Cap and Gown, 1891: Published by the Fraternities The rev. Thomas frank gailor, m.a., -chan cellor of the University of the South, was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on the seventeenth day of September, I856. He is thus thirty-five years old, and is young 'for his age. After taking his m.a. At Racine College in 1876, he entered the Gen eral Theological Seminary, and graduated there in I879, taking deacon's orders in the same year. He was priested in 1880, and two years afterwards was elected chaplain and Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of the South. On the resignation of Dr. Hodgson in August, 1890, he was elected Vice - Chancellor of the University, whereupon Columbia Uni versity conferred the degree of std. Upon him. Dr. Gailor possesses in a very marked degree the affection and admiration of the students at Sewanee. They rejoice in a ruler and a judge over them who has not forgotten his own youth, and who is in perfect touch and sympathy with them. Dr. Gailor is one of the most dignified of men, but he never troubles himself about his dignity. He does not hedge himself about with rules and regulations, or make himself difficult of access. True dignity will always take care of itself. The men appreci ate the many sacrifices Dr. Gailor has made for Sewanee, and Dr. Gailor appreciates their appreciation. He is a man to tie to, and a man to follow. Most of us would rather be wrong with Dr. Gailor than right without him. Excerpt from The Cap and Gown in America: To Which Is Added an Illustrated Sketch of the Intercollegiate System of Academic Costume The typical American college gown, however, is shown in Type 6, the Oxford Bachelors' gown. It is worn at Harvard, Amherst, Dartmouth, Tufts, Union, Beloit, Lafayette, University of Vermont, Dickinson, Wesleyan, South Western Presbyterian University, New York University, Napa, Livingstone College, Trinity and others. Modified to close in front as shown in Type 6c it is worn at Yale and Williams. The beauty of its workmanship, the fullness yet softness of its lines and draping, it adaptability by proper cutting to the man or woman whose shoulders fill it, have contributed to its wide adoption and made it the true American gown, for which the writer has heard only words of praise. The cap is throughout the Oxford cap, or Mortar Board. The cap with stiff skull part is still used, but has been displaced in best outfits for men by that with a folding skull part, an improvement which admits of carrying easily when off the head and packing compactly at any time. It fits a man's head more comfortably, stays on more firmly and cannot get out of shape unless the flat board is broken. "Telling as much a social, educational, and cultural story as institutional history, this detailed account chronicles the ideological patterns, internal and countrywide conflicts, and student experiences at the University of Melbourne from 1850 to 1939. The daily life of staff, professors, and students are recounted during times of turmoil and peace in Australia, including the depression of the 1890s and World War I. The account offers a window into the pedagogical conflicts and research achievements of one of Australia's oldest continuing educational institutions."

Excerpt from The Wellesley Prelude, Vol. 2: April 18, 1891 It is urged that it would be more economical and therefore certainly desirable for the student to wear the cap and gown. Probably this is true, but there would be, I imagine, not so much reduction in the expense as appears on the first consideration. It must be remembered that if the gown should be adopted by the college, it must presumably be made with more care and therefore with more expense than the ordinary Tree Day gown. This would be true especially of the cap, and both would prob ably have to be renewed during the course, especially if worn at Commencement. But there is a very strong argument against the introduction of the custom. It would not be practicable for us to wear the cap and gown. In regard to the cap this has been shown by trial in more than one. Instance. Some seven or eight years ago the students at Brown went so far as to provide themselves with Oxford caps and undertook to wear them. In six weeks the project was abandoned. I believe a similar result has always followed from repeated efforts on the part of the students at Ann Arbor and at other colleges, to introduce the custom. At Bryn Mawr, where the custom of wearing the gown prevails, the cap has fallen in disuse because it was found too heavy and confining. In England it is possible to wear the gown because the climate is such that there is little need for warm out-door wraps, and the gown is sufficient in most cases. It is considered very bad form to wear the gown over an overcoat. But in our severe winters we must have other and warmer wraps, and what wrap can a student wear over a gown in going between the halls and cottages? Dame Fashion would have to set herself the difficult problem of devising a warm wrap which could be gracefully worn over a gown. By the turn of the twentieth century, academic nativism had taken root in elite American colleges—specifically, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant hegemony was endangered by new kinds of student, many of them Catholic and Jewish immigrants. The newcomers threatened to displace native-born Americans by raising academic standards and winning a disproportionate share of the scholarships. The Half-Opened Door analyzes the role of these institutions, casting light on their place in class structure and values in the United States. It details the origins, history, and demise of discriminatory admissions processes and depicts how the entrenched position of the upper class was successfully challenged. The educational, and hence economic, mobility of Catholics and Jews has shown other groups—for example, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Spanish-speaking Americans—not only the difficulties that these earlier aspirants had in overcoming class and ethnic barriers, but the fact that it can be done. One of the ironies of the history of higher education in the United States is the use of quotas by admissions committees. Restrictive measures were imposed on Jews because they were so successful, whereas benign quotas are currently used to encourage underrepresented minorities to enter colleges and professional schools. The competing claims of both the older and the newer minorities continue to be the subject of controversy, editorial comments, and court cases—and will be for years to come.
