In contemporary popular culture, armed women take center stage - but how can they be read from a feminist perspective? How do films, comics, and TV series depict the newly fashionable gunwomen between objectification and feminist empowerment? The contributions to this volume ask this question from different vantage points in cultural and literary studies, film and visual culture studies, history, and art history. They examine military and civic gun cultures, the rediscovery of historical armed women and revolutionaries, cultural phenomena such as gangsta rap, narcocultura and US politics, Bollywood and French cinema, and distinct genres such as the graphic novel, the romance novel, or the German police procedural Tatort.

Cataleya Rojas is the glue that holds her family together. Their needs often come before hers, and she never has a problem with that. When her strung out mother unexpectedly overdoses, she knows it’s time for a change. That change falls in her lap when her father, whom she hasn’t seen much of over the years, offers her the opportunity to come stay with him. Little does she know, his open invitation comes with a hidden agenda. She always wants a taste of the lavish lifestyle, and she’s going to get just that when she goes to stay with him. Living the lavish lifestyle doesn’t come for free, though. It comes with murder, drugs, guns, and money. Things aren’t as they seem, and by the time she figures this out, she will be in way over her head. There is an upside to the sudden move, and that upside is Cezar. Cezar is the leader of his mob, and they only have one agenda—taking out the Colombian Cartel. Cataleya’s father just so happens to be the boss of this cartel, and he’s never been tricked out of his spot. He’s older than most of the new cats in the game, and with old age, comes experience. Yet, that doesn’t stop Cezar from setting his sights on his empire. While he’s fighting to go after what he wants, he finds himself falling for Cataleya. There’s one thing he doesn’t know about her... She’s the heart of the cartel. Will finding out that the girl he wants is in the middle of the cartel he’s after change his mind about her? Will Cataleya be able to keep her head above water as she’s thrown into trials and tribulations? Is this love meant to be, or is seeking after the heart of the cartel just impossible? Which side will come out on top? When truths come out, hearts will be crushed, sides will have to be chosen, and someone may end up having to pay for it all... in blood.

The cartel has always been about power, money, respect, and family. When your family demands respect, earns money, and gains access to power, things are bound to get out of control. This is one finale that only gets crazier by the page. When Cataleya first walked into the world of the cartel, she was blinded by the lavish things around her. Things quickly changed once everything started to be revealed for what it really was, one by one. Before Cataleya could even fully grasp what was going on, she found herself behind the gun that was pointed toward her brother and lover. The choice that was given to her was to pick one to kill. If she didn't, they both would be killed. Hearts are racing, adrenaline is pumping, and the time is ticking. Her desire for love and craving for change has led her down a path that she can't turn back on. Will Cataleya be able to make a decision on her own, or will her heart have to decide for her? Will her actions provoke the cartel and cause things to get murderous, or will they carry her farther than she ever expected to go? She may be the heart of the cartel, but is that enough to stop her from fighting for her hood love?

On the Aisle, Volume 3 by Philip Morency On the Aisle, Volume 3: Film Reviews by Philip Morency is the third in the series of movie reviews written by Philip Morency. This edition contains films ranging from the years 2010 through 2012, with some periodic “oldies but goodies” mixed in. Like Philip’s previous two books, On the Aisle, Volume 3 contains brief and to-the-point movie reviews that are geared toward the average moviegoer. It is not really written from a critic’s perspective, but from that of the average viewer. The reviews are simple and easy to understand. What is unique about the book is that it tells the synopsis of the film, then it gives the author’s opinion of the film, and then it lets the reader decide whether or not they would like to see the film. The films are rated on a scale of 1 through 5. There are also half-star ratings, such as 3 ½ stars (VERY GOOD). The contained films are listed in alphabetical order, and for ease of reference, there is also a table of contents page. Enjoy… On the Aisle, Volume 3.

Beyond Bombshells analyzes the cultural importance of strong women in a variety of current media forms. Action heroines are now more popular in movies, comic books, television, and literature than they have ever been. Their spectacular presence represents shifting ideas about female agency, power, and sexuality. Beyond Bombshells explores how action heroines reveal and reconfigure perceptions about "how" and "why" women are capable of physically dominating roles in modern fiction, indicating the various strategies used to contain and/or exploit female violence. Focusing on a range of successful and controversial recent heroines in the mass media, including Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games books and movies, Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo novels and films, and Hit-Girl from the Kick-Ass movies and comic books, Brown argues that the role of action heroine reveals evolving beliefs about femininity. While women in action roles are still heavily sexualized and objectified, they also challenge preconceived myths about normal or culturally appropriate gender behavior. The ascribed sexuality of modern heroines remains Brown's consistent theme, particularly how objectification intersects with issues of racial stereotyping, romantic fantasies, images of violent adolescent and preadolescent girls, and neoliberal feminist revolutionary parables. Individual chapters study the gendered dynamics of torture in action films, the role of women in partnerships with male colleagues, young women as well as revolutionary leaders in dystopic societies, adolescent sexuality and romance in action narratives, the historical import of non-white heroines, and how modern African American, Asian, and Latina heroines both challenge and are restricted by longstanding racial stereotypes.
