This User’s Guide is intended to support the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and quality evaluation of registries created to increase understanding of patient outcomes. For the purposes of this guide, a patient registry is an organized system that uses observational study methods to collect uniform data (clinical and other) to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a particular disease, condition, or exposure, and that serves one or more predetermined scientific, clinical, or policy purposes. A registry database is a file (or files) derived from the registry. Although registries can serve many purposes, this guide focuses on registries created for one or more of the following purposes: to describe the natural history of disease, to determine clinical effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of health care products and services, to measure or monitor safety and harm, and/or to measure quality of care. Registries are classified according to how their populations are defined. For example, product registries include patients who have been exposed to biopharmaceutical products or medical devices. Health services registries consist of patients who have had a common procedure, clinical encounter, or hospitalization. Disease or condition registries are defined by patients having the same diagnosis, such as cystic fibrosis or heart failure. The User’s Guide was created by researchers affiliated with AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program, particularly those who participated in AHRQ’s DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions About Effectiveness) program. Chapters were subject to multiple internal and external independent reviews.

The book addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism. However, Warburg did not link his theory to the "hallmarks of cancer" and thus his theory was discredited. This book aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention. Support for this position is derived from critical assessment of current cancer theories. Brain cancer case studies are presented as a proof of principle for metabolic solutions to disease management, but similarities are drawn to other types of cancer, including breast and colon, due to the same cellular mutations that they demonstrate.

A complete training guide and day-to-day reference for personnel working in population-based cancer registries. Firmly rooted in practical experience, the manual aims to provide all the information needed to help personnel exercise good judgement as well as follow standard procedures of abstracting and coding. Explanations of specific tasks are complemented by numerous reference tables and charts, definitions, exercises, questions and answers, model forms, and examples of typical reports and records. Details range from a flow chart for finding cancer cases in hospitals, through exercises for practice in abstracting and coding, to advice on how to interpret ambiguous terms often used by physicians. The manual, which is presented in the form of a loose-leaf binder, is suitable for use by anyone starting to work in a cancer registry, and most especially for the many who arrive without special training in medicine. Chapters provide general information on the symptoms of cancer, methods of detection, and forms of treatment, and offer a step-by-step guide to the location, collection, extraction, and abstracting of data from all relevant hospital departments, emphasizing procedures of case-finding needed to achieve complete registration. Exercises are included to let readers practice abstracting relevant information from a range of typical hospital reports. Coding is covered in the main chapter, which explains how to convert the diagnosis of cancer into coded form, following the rules developed for ICD-10 and ICD-O. Other chapters cover document management, security and confidentiality, and quality control. The manual concludes with a 90-page course designed to facilitate a thorough understanding of the medical terminology commonly used in cancer centres.

The statistics are sobering: over 200,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. With this diagnosis, men are expected to psychologically combat the worry, practical concerns, and the emotional and physical changes during an immensely trying time. How to help? In Managing Prostate Cancer: A Guide for Living Better, Dr. Andrew J. Roth, a psychiatrist specializing in psychological support for cancer patients, provides the emotional skills and strategies necessary to help patients deal with the challenges a prostate cancer diagnosis brings to everyday life. These tools, which Dr. Roth terms "Emotional Judo," effectively teach patients to identify what their fears are rooted in, how to distinguish the rational and irrational aspects of their thoughts and behaviors, make healthier choices to promote a more positive approach, and ultimately transform their lives into a more fulfilling and peaceful journey.

Oral Cancer: Diagnosis, Management, and Rehabilitation provides readers with a systematic review of the diagnostic and treatment principles that maximize the outcomes of patients who have been diagnosed with oral cancer. Written by authorities in the fields of head and neck surgical oncology, radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, this textbook provides clinicians with a unified management philosophy that is firmly based upon the best available evidence in the peer-reviewed literature. In-depth clinical reviews of preferred treatment approaches and reconstructive techniques for each oral mucosal site facilitate the development of effective treatment strategies that are tailored to the location and extent of the lesion. The book describes the interrelationship between the site of oral cancer involvement and its impact on outcomes, such as local-regional cancer control and quality of life following treatment. Features: Insightful reviews of controversial clinical issues, such as the management of early mandibular invasion and the clinically negative neck Step-by-step descriptions of surgical techniques which improve access to particular regions of the oral cavity, permit the resection of tumors with minimal morbidity, and result in optimal reconstructive outcomes Exhaustive coverage of topics that have heretofore received limited attention in textbooks devoted to oral cancer, including the evaluation and management of oral premalignant lesions, osseointegrated implantation and dental implant imaging, and orofacial pain Educational photographs and illustrations highlighting important teaching points and critical nuances in surgical technique Ideal for reading cover-to-cover, this book is both an indispensable reference for experienced clinicians and an essential educational tool for residents and other members of the multidisciplinary oral cancer team.
