Santa Teresa de Jesús o de Ávila es una santa, doctora de la iglesia y mística española (1515-1582) es una de las principales escritoras de oración mental, utilizando para este tema sus propias experiencias personales; así mismo utiliza su profundo conocimiento y sus dotes analíticos. En esta obra sobre la oración, "Las Moradas del Castillo Interior" Teresa considera al alma como un castillo que posee muchos aposentos y el principal de ellos es aquel en donde pasan las cosas más secretas entre el alma y Dios. Para entrar en este aposento nos explica que se debe de recurrir a la oración, la cual tiene diferentes grados, y la cual va dejando virtudes en el alma. Ella revela cándidamente este viaje interior como inseparable de su amor por Cristo y que las mansiones más elevadas solo pueden obtenerse estando en estado de gracia a través de los sacramentos de la Iglesia, devoción ferviente de la voluntad del alma hacia Él y recibiendo humildemente un amor tan grandioso que está más allá de la capacidad o descripción humana. Mediante la oración y la meditación, el alma se coloca en un estado tranquilo para recibir los dones de Dios (ella llama "consolaciones") de contemplación, y Teresa observa que los esfuerzos del hombre no pueden lograr esto si no es por la voluntad divina. De hecho, ella repite humildemente que nunca es digna de estos consuelos, pero que siempre está inmensamente agradecida por ellos. Así para ella la oración es como tener una conversación con un amigo muy querido: "La oración contemplativa [oración mental] en mi opinión no es otra cosa que un estrecho intercambio entre amigos, significa tomar tiempo con frecuencia para estar a solas con el que conocemos nos ama."
