This Third Edition of the classic, introductory text on Hong Kong's business and investment environment is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how and why the territory's free-market system works in the 1990s. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the book provides a comprehensive guide to the economic, financial, legal, political, and social underpinnings of Hong Kong's rapidly shifting business landscape. Featuring the best elements and distinctive traits of the previous editions, this new text further probes the fascinating question of Hong Kong's future economic role and incorporates the most up-to-date developments and issues surrounding the transfer to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The authors examine the impact on business conditions of imminent Chinese government rule and outline institutional and structural reforms that will help sustain Hong Kong's position as a major world business centre.

Abstract: Abstract of Dissertation entitled A Comparative Study of the Business Environment in Hong Kong and Shanghai submitted by Ho Sau Man Catherine for the Degree of Master of Arts in China Area Studies at The University of Hong Kong in June 2003 As China's economic reform continues, Shanghai is emerging as the country's commercial and financial centre. China's accession to the WTO means that from 2001 onwards, more sectors will be opened to foreign operators, investors and producers. Consequently, Shanghai will become a gateway to the Chinese market. This creates a challenge for Hong Kong, which has always been the most important stepping stone from international investors' perspective. Through the examination of the economic condition, physical and social infrastructures in Shanghai and Hong Kong, this paper reviews the business environment of the two cities and discusses their attractiveness to foreign investors. The paper also attempts to identify the relative positions of Shanghai and Hong Kong and the possibilities that the two cities could benefit from each other as China continues to integrate with the world economy. This book explores the manifold ways that the current confrontations between China and the US, and political tensions within the Special Administrative Region (SAR) has brought Hong Kong to the forefront of emerging political frictions between Beijing and the territory and growing international rivalry between the two powerful nations of the world. Unlike the situation in the post-WWII decades, which witnessed the internationalisation of the Hong Kong economy, this “New Cold War” poses challenges to the SAR’s status as a global city and international financial and business centre. The enactment of the National Security Law and the growing presence of Beijing in regulating the SAR’s domestic affairs triggered strong reactions from many countries. Hong Kong has to bear some of the consequences of measures imposed onto China as a result of current controversies. The shadow of China also raises many eyebrows about the prospects of Hong Kong as a free and liberal city. And the outbreak of COVID-19 and the concomitant interruption to economic flows and the movement of people further complicate the situation. This book will be of great value to students and scholars in the fields such as Economics, Sociology and Asia Pacific studies. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Asia Pacific Business Review.
